〜のは〜からだ

のは〜からだ

The reason ... is that ...

This pattern first states a fact or result, and then gives its reason at the end: 'the reason (that) A is (that) B'. Putting the reason last makes it the important, new information. It is used in speech and writing when you explain a reason clearly, answer 'why?', or correct a wrong idea.

今朝遅刻したのは、バスがなかなか来なかったからです。

けさちこくしたのは、バスがなかなかこなかったからです。

The reason I was late this morning is that the bus took a long time to come.

Structure

[Result in the plain form] + のは、[reason in the plain form] + からだ / からです. Before のは: verb (遅れたのは), い-adjective (眠いのは), な-adjective + な (元気なのは). Before からだ: verb (寝なかったからだ), い-adjective (安いからだ), な-adjective / noun + だ (好きだからだ, 日曜日だからだ). The subject inside the のは part takes が, not は.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using ので instead of から before だ / です. ので cannot be followed by だ / です. ✗ 遅れたのは、雨が降ったのでです → ✓ 遅れたのは、雨が降ったからです. Also do not drop から: ✗ 雨が降ったです.
  • Using は for the subject inside the のは part. ✗ 私は日本に来たのは… → ✓ 私が日本に来たのは… The のは part is one long noun phrase, so its subject takes が.
  • Forgetting だ after a noun or な-adjective in the reason. ✗ 休みからです → ✓ 休みだからです; ✗ 静かなからだ → ✓ 静かだからだ.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
のは〜だ (it is ... that — emphasis)
〜のは〜だ can stress any part of a sentence, such as a person, place or time: 私が生まれたのは、大阪です (The place I was born is Osaka). 〜のは〜からだ is the same pattern used to stress the reason, so the stressed part ends with から: 私が大阪に住んでいるのは、仕事があるからです (The reason I live in Osaka is that I have work there).
から (because)
With a normal から sentence, the reason comes first and the result is the main point: 道が混んでいたから、遅れました. With 〜のは〜からだ, the result comes first, and the reason at the end is the main point: 遅れたのは、道が混んでいたからです. Use the second one when the listener already knows the result and wants to know why.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar section, the blank is often at the end: 〜のは、…__, where からだ / からです is correct and のでだ / のでです is a trap (ので cannot be followed by だ / です). ためだ (without に) is also correct in formal writing (遅れたのは、事故のためだ), but ためにだ is not. In sentence-building questions, you may have to put のは and からだ in the right places. In reading, 〜のは〜からだ often gives the writer's reason for an opinion, which is a common question point.
