〜せいで/〜せいか

せいで/せいか

Because of (blame) / maybe because of

'A せいで B' means 'because of A, the bad result B happened', and the speaker blames A for it. 'A せいか B' means 'maybe because of A, B': the speaker thinks A is probably the cause but is not sure. The result after せいで is bad; the result after せいか is often bad too, but it can also be neutral. B is a result, not a request or an invitation.

雨のせいで、花火大会が中止になった。

あめのせいで、はなびたいかいがちゅうしになった。

Because of the rain, the fireworks festival was canceled.

Structure

Verb plain form + せいで / せいか (often the た-form: 食べすぎたせいで). い-adjective + せいで / せいか (暑いせいか). な-adjective + な + せいで (下手なせいで; past: 静かだったせいか). Noun + の + せいで / せいか (雨のせいで, 年のせいか). At the end of a sentence: 〜せいだ / 〜せいです. 〜を…のせいにする means 'to blame something on ...'.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using せいで for a good result. ✗ 先生のせいで、合格できました → ✓ 先生のおかげで、合格できました. せいで always has a feeling of blame.
  • Wrong connection. Nouns need の and な-adjectives need な: ✗ 雨せいで / 雨なせいで → ✓ 雨のせいで; ✗ 下手のせいで → ✓ 下手なせいで.
  • Putting an invitation or a request after せいで. ✗ 雨のせいで、家にいましょう → ✓ 雨だから、家にいましょう. The part after せいで is a result that happened, not an action you suggest.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
おかげで (thanks to)
Both show a cause and connect in the same way (noun + の, な-adjective + な), but the feeling is opposite. せいで is for a bad result and blames the cause: 隣の工事のせいで、よく眠れなかった (I couldn't sleep well because of the construction next door). おかげで is for a good result and shows thanks: 静かな部屋のおかげで、よく眠れた (Thanks to the quiet room, I slept well).
ので (because — neutral)
ので gives a reason without blaming anyone, and it can be followed by a request: 雨が降っているので、タクシーで行きましょう. せいで adds the feeling 'this cause is to blame', and the second part is only a bad result: 雨のせいで、服がぬれてしまった. The connection after a noun is also different: 雨なので, but 雨のせいで.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar section, せいで is usually tested with おかげで and ために: decide whether the result is bad (せいで), good (おかげで) or neutral and formal (ために). せいか is tested when the speaker is not sure about the cause, often with 最近, なんとなく or 〜ような気がする. In reading, 〜のせいにする (to blame someone) also appears.
