〜おかげで
おかげで
Thanks to
'A おかげで B' means 'thanks to A, B': A is the cause of a good result B, and the speaker feels thankful for it. B is usually something that has already happened or a state that is true now. Sometimes people use おかげで with a bad result as sarcasm: 君が寝坊したおかげで… ('thanks a lot to you...'). For a bad result said plainly, use せいで.

Common mistakes
3
- Using おかげで for a bad result when you simply want to say the cause. ✗ 台風のおかげで、旅行が中止になった → ✓ 台風のせいで、旅行が中止になった. Without sarcasm, おかげで is for good results only.
- Wrong connection. Nouns need の and な-adjectives need な: ✗ 先生おかげで / 先生なおかげで → ✓ 先生のおかげで; ✗ 便利のおかげで → ✓ 便利なおかげで.
- Putting a request or an invitation after おかげで. The second part is a result, not an action you ask for. ✗ 天気がいいおかげで、散歩しましょう → ✓ 天気がいいから、散歩しましょう.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- せいで (because of — blame)
- Both show a cause, but the feeling is opposite. おかげで is for a good result and shows thanks: 雨のおかげで、野菜がよく育った (Thanks to the rain, the vegetables grew well). せいで is for a bad result and shows blame: 雨のせいで、花火が見られなかった (Because of the rain, we couldn't see the fireworks). The connection is the same for both (noun + の, な-adjective + な).
- ため(に) (because of — neutral, formal)
- ため(に) just states a cause and its result in a neutral, formal way, as in news or notices: 大雪のため、電車が遅れています. It does not show thanks or blame. おかげで adds the speaker's feeling of thanks, so it is common when you talk about people who helped you: 友達のおかげで、引っ越しが早く終わった.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In the grammar section, おかげで is often tested against せいで: check whether the result is good or bad. Other choices can be ために, くせに or わりに. Questions on connection check 名詞+の+おかげで and 〜のは〜おかげだ. In reading and listening, a sarcastic おかげで (with a bad result and a complaining tone) can appear, so look at the whole context.
