〜くせに

くせに

Even though (with criticism)

'A くせに B' means 'even though A, the person does B', and the speaker is angry, annoyed, or looks down on that person. It is like のに, but the feeling of blame is much stronger. Usually both parts are about the same person, and that person is not the speaker. It is used in conversation and can sound rude, so do not use it about your teacher or boss to their face.

田中さんは自分では何もしないくせに、人の仕事に文句ばかり言う。

たなかさんはじぶんではなにもしないくせに、ひとのしごとにもんくばかりいう。

Tanaka doesn't do anything himself, and yet he's always complaining about other people's work.

Structure

Verb plain form + くせに (知っているくせに, しないくせに, 言ったくせに). い-adjective + くせに (若いくせに). な-adjective + な + くせに (下手なくせに; past: 下手だったくせに). Noun + の + くせに (学生のくせに; past: 学生だったくせに). It can also end a sentence: 知っているくせに。

Examples

7
  • 兄は学生のくせに、全然勉強しない。

    あにはがくせいのくせに、ぜんぜんべんきょうしない。

My older brother is a student, and yet he doesn't study at all.

  • 彼は歌が下手なくせに、カラオケに行くとマイクを離しません。

    かれはうたがへたなくせに、カラオケにいくとマイクをはなしません。

He's bad at singing, and yet when we go to karaoke he won't let go of the microphone.

  • あの人は若いくせに、すぐ「疲れた」と言って何もしません。

    あのひとはわかいくせに、すぐ「つかれた」といってなにもしません。

That person is young, and yet he quickly says "I'm tired" and doesn't do anything.

  • 彼女は「手伝う」と言ったくせに、結局来なかった。

    かのじょは「てつだう」といったくせに、けっきょくこなかった。

She said "I'll help", and yet in the end she didn't come.

  • 自分も遅刻したくせに、どうして私にだけ怒るんですか。

    じぶんもちこくしたくせに、どうしてわたしにだけおこるんですか。

You were late too, so why are you angry only at me?

  • 本当は全部わかっているくせに。

    ほんとうはぜんぶわかっているくせに。

You actually understand everything (and you're pretending you don't).

Common mistakes

3
  • Using くせに when the two parts have different subjects, or when the speaker talks about themself. ✗ 私が手伝ったくせに、彼はお礼を言わない → ✓ 私が手伝ったのに、彼はお礼を言わない. For a simple 'even though', use のに.
  • Wrong connection after nouns and な-adjectives. Nouns need の and な-adjectives need な: ✗ 子どもなくせに / 子どもだくせに → ✓ 子どものくせに; ✗ 下手のくせに → ✓ 下手なくせに.
  • Using くせに for a neutral fact with no person to blame. ✗ 雨が降ったくせに、試合は中止にならなかった → ✓ 雨が降ったのに、試合は中止にならなかった. くせに always criticizes a person.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
のに (even though)
のに shows surprise or disappointment that the result is different from what you expected. It can be used about yourself, about things, and when the two parts have different subjects: 薬を飲んだのに、熱が下がらない. くせに is only about a person you criticize, and the blame is much stronger: 弟は頭がいいくせに、全然努力しない (My brother is smart, and yet he makes no effort at all — I'm annoyed). If you are not sure, のに is the safer choice.
わりに (considering)
わりに compares a result with an expected level, and it can be positive or negative: このレストランは安いわりにおいしい (This restaurant is tasty for the price). くせに is never used for praise; it is always a complaint about a person: 彼は料理人のくせに、料理が下手だ (He's a cook, and yet he's bad at cooking).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar section, くせに often appears in fill-in-the-blank questions next to のに, わりに, おかげで and にしては; look for a person who is criticized and the same subject in both parts. Questions also test the connection 名詞+の+くせに and な-adjective+な+くせに. In reading and listening, くせに is a clear sign of the speaker's anger or dissatisfaction toward someone.
