〜にしては

にしては

For a ... / considering that ... (unexpectedly)

〜にしては takes a fact (A) and says that the result (B) is different from what is normal for A: 'for a child', 'for September', 'for a first try'. It shows the speaker's surprise, and B can be praise or criticism. B is something that goes against the normal image of A, not something you would expect from it.

このケーキ、初めて作ったにしては、よくできたね。

このケーキ、はじめてつくったにしては、よくできたね。

For your first time making it, this cake turned out well.

Structure

Noun + にしては: 小学生にしては, 九月にしては (no だ, な or の before it). Verb (plain form) + にしては: 初めて作ったにしては. にしては is usually not used right after an adjective; use わりに there (広いわりに).

Common mistakes

3
  • Using にしては when the result is what you expect. ✗ プロの選手にしては、上手だ → ✓ プロの選手だから、上手だ. A professional is expected to be good, so there is nothing surprising. にしては needs a result that does not match A.
  • Adding な, だ or の before にしては. ✗ 九月なにしては / ✗ 九月だにしては → ✓ 九月にしては. A noun joins にしては directly.
  • Putting にしては right after an adjective. ✗ この部屋は広いにしては、家賃が安い → ✓ この部屋は広いわりに、家賃が安い. With adjectives, わりに is the natural choice.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜わりに (considering)
Both mean 'for / considering', and with some nouns both are fine: 小学生にしては背が高い and 小学生のわりに背が高い. The connections are different: にしては joins a noun directly (小学生にしては), while わりに needs の (小学生のわりに). わりに can also follow adjectives (便利なわりに), but にしては usually cannot. にしては fits well when A is a fact or a group (a child, September, a first try) and you judge B against what is normal for it.
〜として (as, in the role of)
として shows a role or position: 先生として働いている (I work as a teacher). にしては compares the result with what is normal for that position: 先生にしては字が下手だ (His handwriting is bad for a teacher). English 'for' and 'as' can be confusing here: 'as a teacher' is として, 'for a teacher (surprisingly)' is にしては.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, にしては is often tested with わりに, として and にとって. Check two things: the word before the blank (a noun or a verb, not an adjective), and whether the result is surprising for that fact. In sentence-ordering questions, remember 'A にしては、B': A is the fact, B is the unexpected result. In reading passages, にしては often shows the writer's surprise or light criticism.
