〜にとって
にとって
For / from the standpoint of
〜にとって means 'for X' in the sense of 'from X's point of view'. It shows whose standpoint is used to judge something as important, difficult, useful, and so on. The part after it gives that judgment, usually with an adjective, a noun + だ, or an evaluating verb such as 役に立つ or 〜になる. It is not followed by a simple action or a wish.
私にとって、家族がいちばん大切です。
わたしにとって、かぞくがいちばんたいせつです。
For me, my family is the most important thing.
Structure
Noun + にとって (私にとって, 子どもにとって). With は or も: にとっては, にとっても. Before a noun: Noun + にとっての + noun (私にとっての幸せ). The noun is usually a person, a group or an organization. The second part is a judgment or evaluation: 大切だ, 難しい, 便利だ, いい経験だ, 問題だ.

- Using にとって for the target of an action or a way of treating someone. For that, use に対して (or just に): ✕ 店員は客にとって丁寧に話す → ○ 店員は客に対して丁寧に話す.
- Following にとって with a wish or an action. にとって needs a judgment such as 大切だ or 難しい: ✕ 私にとって、日本へ行きたい → ○ 私は日本へ行きたい. ✕ 友だちにとってプレゼントを買った → ○ 友だちにプレゼントを買った.
- Confusing にとって with として. として shows a role or position ('as'): ✕ 留学生にとって日本に来た → ○ 留学生として日本に来た (I came to Japan as an international student).

- 〜に対して (toward, a target)
- Both can be translated as 'for' or 'to'. にとって gives the person whose point of view is used for a judgment: 祖父にとって、毎朝の散歩は楽しみだ (For my grandfather, his morning walk is something to enjoy). に対して gives the person that an action or attitude is aimed at: 祖父は孫に対して優しい (My grandfather is kind to his grandchildren). A judgment goes with にとって; a way of treating someone goes with に対して.
- 〜として (as, in the role of)
- として shows a role, a position or a kind: 通訳として働く (work as an interpreter). にとって shows whose point of view is used: 通訳にとって、正しい発音は大切だ (For an interpreter, correct pronunciation is important). Ask yourself: is the noun the person's role (として), or the person who judges (にとって)?
How this shows up on the JLPT
In the grammar-form section, にとって is usually tested against に対して, として, について and に関して. Look at the end of the sentence: a judgment such as 大切だ, 難しい, 役に立つ or いい経験だ points to にとって. An action or attitude aimed at someone points to に対して, and a role points to として. In reading passages, にとって often introduces whose point of view the writer is taking.
