〜向け

むけ

Made for / intended for

〜向け shows who a product, service or piece of information was made for. The maker had that target in mind from the start. It is very common in shops, advertisements and news: 子ども向けの本 is a book that was written for children.

これは子ども向けの本です。

これはこどもむけのほんです。

This is a book for children.

Structure

Noun + 向けだ / Noun + 向けの + noun / Noun + 向けに + verb. The noun is the target (a group of people, a place, a market). 向け attaches directly to the noun: no の before it.

Common mistakes

3
  • Putting の between the noun and 向け. ✗ 子どもの向けの本 → ✓ 子ども向けの本. 向け works like a suffix, so it joins the noun directly. の comes after 向け when another noun follows.
  • Using 向け for the direction a room or window faces. ✗ 南向けの部屋 → ✓ 南向きの部屋. For the direction something faces, use 向き.
  • Using 向け when you only mean that something suits a person. For 'this job suits me', say この仕事は私に向いている or 私向きだ, not ✗ 私向けだ. 向け is for things that were planned and made for a target.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜向き (suitable for)
〜向け talks about the maker's intention: 子ども向けの映画 is a movie that was produced for children. 〜向き talks about the result: 子ども向きの映画 is a movie that suits children, even if nobody planned it that way. So a company 'makes' 海外向けの車 (cars for overseas), but a short, easy hiking course 'is' 初心者向きだ (good for beginners).
Noun + のための (for the sake of)
Noun + のための also means 'for', and 留学生のためのクラス is close to 留学生向けのクラス. But 向け is about a target group of a product or service, so it is not used for one person you want to help: ✓ 母のために花を買った, ✗ 母向けに花を買った.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the N3 grammar section, 向け and 向き often appear together as choices. Check whether the sentence is about something that was made or planned for a target (作られた, 書かれた, 商品, サービス → 向け) or about direction and suitability (南, 東, 部屋 → 向き). In sentence-ordering questions, remember the fixed order: noun + 向け + の + noun, or noun + 向け + に + verb. In reading passages such as notices and advertisements, 〜向け tells you who the information is for.
