〜っぱなし

っぱなし

leave ... as is / keep ...ing (negative nuance)

〜っぱなし has two main uses. First, something is left in a state that should normally be changed or finished: 電気をつけっぱなし (leaving the light on), 窓を開けっぱなし (leaving the window open). Second, the same action or state continues for a long time: 立ちっぱなし (standing the whole time), 負けっぱなし (losing again and again). In both uses it often shows that the speaker thinks it is careless, tiring or not good.

エアコンをつけっぱなしで出かけてしまいました。

エアコンをつけっぱなしででかけてしまいました。

I went out and left the air conditioner on.

Structure

Verb ます-stem + っぱなし (つけます → つけっぱなし, 開けます → 開けっぱなし, 立ちます → 立ちっぱなし). It works like a noun: 〜っぱなしだ / 〜っぱなしです, 〜っぱなしにする (leave it ...), 〜っぱなしで (with it left ... / after ...ing all the time), 〜っぱなしの + noun.

Common mistakes

3
  • Putting the dictionary form or the て-form before っぱなし. ✗ つけるっぱなし / ✗ つけてっぱなし → ✓ つけっぱなし. Use the ます-stem: つけます → つけ + っぱなし.
  • Forgetting に before する. ✗ ドアを開けっぱなしする → ✓ ドアを開けっぱなしにする. っぱなし works like a noun, so "leave it that way" is 〜っぱなしにする.
  • Using 〜っぱなし when you keep something on or open on purpose, for a good reason. っぱなし often sounds careless. For a planned action, 〜ておく is more natural: 部屋を暖かくするために、暖房をつけておいた (I left the heater on to keep the room warm).

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜まま (as it is, without changing)
〜まま follows the た-form (and also ない-forms, adjectives and nouns). It simply describes that a state did not change: テレビをつけたまま寝た (I slept with the TV on). 〜っぱなし follows the ます-stem, and it adds the speaker's feeling that this is careless or not good: テレビをつけっぱなしで寝た (I fell asleep and carelessly left the TV on). 〜っぱなし also has the "keep ...ing" meaning for actions (話しっぱなし, 負けっぱなし), which 〜まま does not have.
〜つづける (continue doing)
〜つづける is neutral, and it can show effort or will: 毎日日本語を勉強しつづけた (I kept studying Japanese every day). 〜っぱなし used for a continuing action usually shows that it was tiring or unpleasant, often without a break: 電車が混んでいて、一時間立ちっぱなしだった (The train was crowded, and I had to stand for an hour).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, check the ます-stem before っぱなし and the particle after it: 〜っぱなしにする, 〜っぱなしで, 〜っぱなしの + noun. When a question asks you to choose between 〜まま and 〜っぱなし, look at the verb form (た-form → まま, ます-stem → っぱなし). In reading passages, っぱなし often shows the writer's complaint about someone's habit.
