〜ておく has two main uses. (1) Doing something in advance, as preparation for a later need: 旅行の前に切符を買っておきます. This includes doing something now so that things are ready for the next time, such as putting tools back. (2) Leaving something in its present state on purpose: 窓を開けておきます (I'll leave the window open). It is used with actions that a person does on purpose.
§1Structure
Verb て-form + おく: 買う → 買っておく, 読む → 読んでおく, する → しておく. おく conjugates like a Group I verb: 〜ておきます, 〜ておきません, 〜ておきました, 〜ておいてください, 〜ておかない, 〜ておいた. In casual speech ておく becomes とく and でおく becomes どく: 買っとく, 読んどく, しといて.

§3Common mistakes
- Attaching おく to the dictionary form or the ます-stem: ✕ 予約するおきます / ✕ 予約しおきます → 予約しておきます. おく always follows the て-form.
- Mixing up ておく and てある. ておく is the action of preparing; てある is the state after someone has prepared. For something that is already done and ready, say 飲み物はもう買ってあります or 買っておきました, not ✕ 飲み物はもう買っておきます.
- Getting the casual short form wrong. て + おく becomes とく, but で + おく becomes どく: 買っておく → 買っとく, 読んでおく → 読んどく (✕ 読んとく). The request form also shortens: 見ておいて → 見といて.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てある (has been done and left that way)
- ておく looks at the action, and the person who prepares is the subject: わたしは切符を買っておきます (I will buy the tickets in advance). てある looks at the result, and the thing is what the sentence is about: 切符はもう買ってあります (The tickets have already been bought). Before the preparation, use ておく; to report that everything is ready, use てある.
- 〜まま (left as it is, unchanged)
- Both can describe an unchanged state, but the attitude is different. ておく is a choice the person makes on purpose: 部屋が暑いので、窓を開けておきます (The room is hot, so I'll leave the window open). たまま often describes a state that should have been changed, so it fits carelessness: 窓を開けたまま、出かけてしまいました (I went out with the window left open).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N4 grammar questions test ておく against てある, ている, てしまう and てみる after the same て-form. Look for time words that show preparation: 〜前に, 〜までに, あした〜から, 来週〜ので. A request for preparation is 〜ておいてください, and the reply that it is already done is もう〜てあります or もう〜ておきました. The 'leave as is' use appears in dialogues: 「消しましょうか。」「いいえ、つけておいてください。」 In listening, the short forms とく / どく / といて are common, so learn to hear 買っとく as 買っておく.
§6Quick check (3 questions)

らいしゅうテストがありますから、よくふくしゅうして__ください。
