〜とく/〜どく
とく/どく
Spoken short form of 〜ておく
〜とく and 〜どく are the short spoken forms of 〜ておく and 〜でおく. The meaning is the same: do something ahead of time to get ready, or leave something as it is. They are used in everyday talk. Similar short forms are 〜てる for 〜ている (見てる) and 〜てく for 〜ていく (持ってく). In formal speech and in writing, use the full forms.
飲み物は私が買っとくよ。
のみものはわたしがかっとくよ。
I'll buy the drinks ahead of time.

Common mistakes
3
- Using とく for verbs whose て-form ends in で. 〜で becomes 〜どく: ✕ 読んとく → ○ 読んどく, ✕ 呼んといて → ○ 呼んどいて.
- Keeping て before とく. とく already contains て, so て disappears: ✕ 買ってとく → ○ 買っとく, ✕ 準備してといた → ○ 準備しといた.
- Using it in formal speech or writing, such as a report to a customer. ✕ 資料を送っときました → ○ 資料を送っておきました.
How it's different from similar grammar

- ておく (do in advance / leave as is)
- The meaning is the same; only the style is different. 〜ておく can be used anywhere: 会議の前に資料を読んでおきます (I will read the materials before the meeting). 〜とく / 〜どく is for relaxed talk: 会議の前に資料を読んどくね. In JLPT reading passages you will mostly see 〜ておく, but in listening you often hear 〜とく.
- ちゃう / じゃう (short form of てしまう)
- Both are spoken short forms made from the て-form, but the meanings are different. 〜とく is 〜ておく: you do something now to be ready for later. 出かける前にご飯を食べとく (I'll eat before I go out, to be ready). 〜ちゃう is 〜てしまう: the action is finished completely or is a mistake. 弟のケーキまで食べちゃった (I ate up even my brother's cake).
How this shows up on the JLPT
〜とく / 〜どく is mainly a listening point at N3. In task-based listening questions, a line like コピーしといて tells you what the person must do before something else, so catch it as コピーしておいて. 開けといて means 'leave it open', not 'open and close'. In grammar-choice questions, check て → と and で → ど, and watch out for forms with an extra て such as 買ってとく.
