〜ちゃう/〜じゃう
ちゃう/じゃう
Spoken short form of 〜てしまう
〜ちゃう and 〜じゃう are the short spoken forms of 〜てしまう and 〜でしまう. The meaning is the same: an action is finished completely, or something happens that the speaker did not want or plan. They are used in everyday talk with friends and family. With ます (〜ちゃいました) they are still casual, so use 〜てしまいました in formal situations and in writing.

Common mistakes
3
- Using ちゃう for verbs whose て-form ends in で. 〜で becomes 〜じゃう: ✕ 飲んちゃった → ○ 飲んじゃった, ✕ 泳いちゃった → ○ 泳いじゃった.
- Keeping て before ちゃう. ちゃう already contains て, so て disappears: ✕ 食べてちゃった → ○ 食べちゃった, ✕ 忘れてちゃう → ○ 忘れちゃう.
- Using it in formal situations such as a report, a business e-mail, or an apology to a customer. ✕ 書類をなくしちゃいました → ○ 書類をなくしてしまいました.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- てしまう (finish / do by mistake)
- The meaning is the same; only the style is different. 〜てしまう can be used anywhere, in speech and in writing: 財布を落としてしまいました (I dropped my wallet). 〜ちゃう is its spoken short form for relaxed talk: 財布を落としちゃった. On the JLPT, you may hear ちゃう in listening, but written passages mostly use 〜てしまう.
- てはいけない (must not) → spoken ちゃいけない / ちゃだめ
- In speech, 〜ては also becomes 〜ちゃ, and 〜では becomes 〜じゃ. So ここで写真を撮っちゃだめだよ means 撮ってはだめ (You must not take photos here). This ちゃ is a different thing from ちゃう. Compare: ケーキを食べちゃった (I ate the cake up) and ケーキを食べちゃいけない (I must not eat the cake).
How this shows up on the JLPT
〜ちゃう / 〜じゃう appears mainly in N3 listening, where friends or family talk at natural speed. You need to hear 忘れちゃった as 忘れてしまった at once and catch the feeling of regret or 'all done'. In the reading section it appears inside conversations and casual messages. In grammar-choice questions, check て → ちゃ and で → じゃ, and do not confuse it with 〜ちゃいけない (= 〜てはいけない).
