〜でございます/〜ております

でございます/ております

Extra-polite speech: でございます / ております / まいります

These words make your speech very polite toward the listener. Use them for your own actions, for people on your side such as family and coworkers, and for things and events, as in 電車がまいります. They are common in shops, on the phone, in announcements, and in speeches. They do not show respect to the person who does the action, so do not use them for the listener's actions or for a person you respect.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using おります or まいります for the listener's action. These words do not show respect to the person who acts. When you ask a teacher about his or her plans: ✕ 先生はあした学校におりますか → ○ 先生はあした学校にいらっしゃいますか.
  • Using でございます to ask who the listener is. でございます is only polite and does not show respect to the person, so for a person you respect でいらっしゃいます is the better choice and the one expected on the test: △ 田中様でございますか → ○ 田中様でいらっしゃいますか. For yourself, でございます is correct: 田中でございます.
  • Using an honorific for yourself when you want to sound polite. ✕ 私は東京に住んでいらっしゃいます → ○ 私は東京に住んでおります.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
Special humble verbs (うかがう, 申し上げる, いただく)
Humble verbs like うかがう lower your action to show respect to the person your action is directed at: あした、先生のお宅にうかがいます (I will visit my teacher's home tomorrow). まいります, おります, and 申します are only polite toward the listener, so no respected person needs to be in the sentence: 来週、出張で大阪にまいります (I am going to Osaka on business next week). うかがいます does not fit this Osaka sentence, because there is no person to show respect to.
Special honorific verbs (いらっしゃる, おっしゃる)
Honorific verbs raise the action of a person you respect: 社長は会議室にいらっしゃいます (The president is in the meeting room — said inside the company). おります is for yourself and your own side: 私は会議室におります (I will be in the meeting room). When you speak to a customer about your own president, the president is on your side, so おります is used: 社長は今、席をはずしております (The president is away from his desk now).

How this shows up on the JLPT

N3 grammar-choice questions give a scene such as a phone call, a shop, or a self-introduction, and ask you to choose among honorific, humble, and extra-polite forms. First check whose action it is. If it is your own side or a thing, おります / まいります / でございます fit; if it is the listener or a respected person, choose いらっしゃいます and so on. In listening, station and shop announcements use 〜がまいります and 〜でございます a lot, so you need to catch them as simply 来ます and です.
