Special honorific verbs (いらっしゃる, 召し上がる, おっしゃる ...)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

These verbs show respect for the person who does the action, such as a teacher, a boss, or a customer. For these everyday verbs, the special verb is usually preferred to お〜になる. You never use them for your own actions or, when talking to outsiders, for your own family.

§1Structure

Some common verbs are replaced by a special honorific verb: 行く・来る・いる → いらっしゃる; 食べる・飲む → 召し上がる; 言う → おっしゃる; 見る → ご覧になる; する → なさる; くれる → くださる; 知っている → ご存じだ (ご存じです). 〜ている becomes 〜ていらっしゃる. The ます-forms of いらっしゃる, おっしゃる, なさる and くださる are irregular: いらっしゃいます, おっしゃいます, なさいます, くださいます (not 〜ります). Their て-form and た-form are regular (いらっしゃって, おっしゃった).

§2Examples

  • 先生は今、教室にいらっしゃいます。

    せんせいはいま、きょうしつにいらっしゃいます。

The teacher is in the classroom now.

  • 社長はあした何時に会社へいらっしゃいますか。

    しゃちょうはあしたなんじにかいしゃへいらっしゃいますか。

What time will the president come to the office tomorrow?

  • どうぞ、たくさん召し上がってください。

    どうぞ、たくさんめしあがってください。

Please eat as much as you like.

  • 先生は「来週テストをします」とおっしゃいました。

    せんせいは「らいしゅうテストをします」とおっしゃいました。

The teacher said, "We will have a test next week."

  • 部長はこの写真をもうご覧になりましたか。

    ぶちょうはこのしゃしんをもうごらんになりましたか。

Has the department manager already seen this photo?

  • 社長はゴルフをなさいません。

    しゃちょうはゴルフをなさいません。

The president does not play golf.

  • 田中さんの新しい住所をご存じですか。

    たなかさんのあたらしいじゅうしょをごぞんじですか。

Do you know Tanaka-san's new address?

  • 先生は今、電話で話していらっしゃる。

    せんせいはいま、でんわではなしていらっしゃる。

The teacher is talking on the phone now.

§3Common mistakes

  • Making the ます-form with り. ✕ いらっしゃります / ✕ おっしゃります / ✕ なさります → ○ いらっしゃいます / ○ おっしゃいます / ○ なさいます. These verbs end in る, but their ます-form is 〜います.
  • Using an honorific verb for your own action. ✕ 私はもう昼ご飯を召し上がりました。 → ○ 私はもう昼ご飯を食べました (or the humble いただきました). In the same way, answer ご存じですか with 知っています or 存じています, not with ご存じです.
  • Treating ご存じ as a verb. ✕ ご存じますか / ✕ ご存じていますか → ○ ご存じですか. ご存じ works like a noun, so it takes です.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

Special humble verbs (参る, 申す, いただく ...)
Honorific verbs are for the respected person's action; humble verbs are for your own action. 来る: 先生は3時にいらっしゃいます (The teacher will come at three) / 私は3時に参ります (I will come at three). 食べる: 召し上がる / いただく. 言う: おっしゃる / 申す. 見る: ご覧になる / 拝見する. Mixing them up is a serious keigo mistake.
お〜になる (regular honorific pattern)
お〜になる is the regular way to make an honorific: 書く → お書きになる, 待つ → お待ちになる. Verbs that have a special honorific verb normally use it instead: 見る is ご覧になる, not ✕ お見になる; 来る is いらっしゃる, not ✕ お来になる. For 食べる, 召し上がる is the usual choice.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, the choices often mix honorific and humble verbs (いらっしゃいます / 参ります, 召し上がります / いただきます). Check who does the action: if it is the teacher, boss, or customer, choose the honorific verb. The irregular ます-forms (いらっしゃいます, おっしゃいます) are also a common target. In listening, shop and office conversations use these verbs all the time, so knowing which plain verb each one stands for is necessary to follow who does what.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. You ask your teacher whether she has already had lunch. Choose the correct verb: 先生、お昼ご飯はもう__か。

    せんせい、おひるごはんはもう__か。

  • 2. Which sentence uses a special honorific verb correctly?

  • 3. What is the correct ます-form of the honorific verb おっしゃる?
