〜てくださる

てくださる

(someone of higher status) kindly does something for me

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜てくださる is the respectful form of 〜てくれる. It says that a person of higher status, such as a teacher, a boss or a customer, does something for me or for a person on my side, such as my family. The speaker shows respect to that person and also a feeling of thanks. It is often used when you thank someone: 〜てくださって、ありがとうございます.

§1Structure

[person of higher status] が/は + (わたしに) + verb て-form + くださる. The person who does the action is the subject and takes が or は. くださる is a special verb: its ます-form is くださいます (not くださります). Other forms: くださって (て-form), くださった (た-form), くださらない (ない-form). Polite forms: 〜てくださいます / 〜てくださいません / 〜てくださいました / 〜てくださいませんでした.

§2Examples

§3Common mistakes

  • Making the ます-form like a normal Group I verb: ✕ 教えてくださりました → ○ 教えてくださいました. くださる is a special respectful verb, like いらっしゃる, and its ます-form is くださいます.
  • Mixing up the particles of 〜てくださる and 〜ていただく. With 〜てくださる the person who does the action takes が/は; with 〜ていただく that person takes に. ✕ 先生に漢字を教えてくださいました → ○ 先生が漢字を教えてくださいました, or ○ 先生に漢字を教えていただきました.
  • Using 〜てくださる for your own family or for your own action. When you talk to people outside your family, you do not use respectful words for your family: ✕ 兄が手伝ってくださいました → ○ 兄が手伝ってくれました. And the subject is never わたし: ✕ わたしは先生に本を貸してくださいました.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜てくれる (someone does something for me)
The direction is the same: someone does something for me. The difference is the level of respect for that person. For friends, family and people below you, use 〜てくれる: 友だちが写真を撮ってくれました (My friend took a photo for me). For teachers, bosses, customers and people you do not know well, use 〜てくださる: 先生が写真を撮ってくださいました (My teacher kindly took a photo for me).
〜ていただく (I humbly receive the favor of someone doing something)
Both can describe the same event politely, but the subject is different. With 〜てくださる the subject is the person who does the action: 課長が資料を見せてくださいました (The section chief kindly showed me the papers). With 〜ていただく the subject is me, the receiver, and the other person takes に: わたしは課長に資料を見せていただきました (I had the section chief show me the papers). In a test, look at the particle after the person: が → くださる, に → いただく.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions, 〜てくださる usually appears together with 〜ていただく and 〜てさしあげる as choices. First find who does the action, then check the particle: 先生が → くださいました, 先生に → いただきました. Sentence-ordering questions often use the set phrase 〜てくださって、ありがとうございます. In reading and listening, 〜てくださる tells you that the other person did the action, even when わたしに is not written.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 課長がわたしに仕事のやり方を教えて__。

    かちょうがわたしにしごとのやりかたをおしえて__。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'My teacher kindly lent me a dictionary'?

  • 3. In which situation is 〜てくださいました the best choice, not 〜てくれました?
