〜ていただく means that I receive the favor of an action from someone I should respect, such as a teacher, a boss, a customer or a stranger. The meaning is the same as 〜てもらう, but いただく is a humble verb, so the sentence shows respect to the person who did the action. It is very common in polite thanks and polite requests.
§1Structure
[Receiver] は [superior] に verb て-form + いただく (polite: 〜ていただきます, past: 〜ていただきました). The subject is the receiver, usually 'I' (often left out), and the person who does the action takes に. It is the humble form of 〜てもらう. Thanks: 〜ていただいて、ありがとうございます. Requests use the potential form: 〜ていただけますか/〜ていただけませんか.

§3Common mistakes
- Marking the person who does the action with が: ✗ 先生が手紙を書いていただきました. The subject of いただく is the receiver, and the doer takes に: ○ 先生に手紙を書いていただきました. If the teacher is the subject, the verb must be くださる: ○ 先生が手紙を書いてくださいました.
- Making a request with いただきませんか: ✗ 手伝っていただきませんか. A request asks whether I 'can receive' the favor, so the potential form いただける is needed: ○ 手伝っていただけませんか, ○ 手伝っていただけますか.
- Using 〜ていただく about your own family when you talk to an outsider: ✗ 母にお弁当を作っていただきました. Your family is on your side, so you do not raise them in front of other people. Use 〜てもらう: ○ 母にお弁当を作ってもらいました.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てもらう (the plain form of this pattern)
- The structure and the meaning are the same: the receiver is the subject, and the doer takes に. The only difference is respect. For a friend, a classmate or a family member: 友だちに写真を撮ってもらいました. For a teacher, a boss, a customer or a stranger you want to be polite to: 先生に写真を撮っていただきました.
- 〜てくださる (a superior does something for me)
- Both are polite ways to talk about a superior's favor, and they can describe the same event. With 〜てくださる, the superior is the subject (が/は): 先生が道を教えてくださいました (My teacher kindly told me the way). With 〜ていただく, I am the subject and the superior takes に: 先生に道を教えていただきました (I had my teacher tell me the way). Check the particle after the person to choose the verb.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N4 grammar questions often give 先生に…て__ or 先生が…て__ and ask you to choose between いただきました and くださいました: に → いただく, が → くださる. The request form is also tested: 〜ていただけませんか (potential), not 〜ていただきませんか. In listening, 〜ていただけませんか is a very polite request, and 〜ていただいて、ありがとうございました is polite thanks, so you can tell that the speaker is talking to a superior or a customer.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 私は先生__レポートを見ていただきました。
わたしはせんせい__レポートをみていただきました。
2. Which sentence has the same meaning as 「部長が私の荷物を持ってくださいました。」?
ぶちょうがわたしのにもつをもってくださいました。
3. Choose the form that fits the blank: すみません、この漢字の読み方を教えて__。
すみません、このかんじのよみかたをおしえて__。
