Humble verbs lower the speaker's own action, or the action of someone on the speaker's side such as family or co-workers, to show respect for the listener or the person the action is directed to. You hear them in self-introductions, at work, and in shops. They are never used for the action of the person you respect.
§1Structure
Some common verbs are replaced by a special humble verb when the speaker talks about their own action: 行く・来る → 参る (参ります); 訪ねる・聞く → 伺う; いる → おる (おります); 言う → 申す (申します); 食べる・飲む・もらう → いただく; 見る → 拝見する; する → いたす (いたします); 知っている → 存じている (negative: 存じません). 〜ている becomes 〜ております. These verbs are almost always used in the ます-form, but plain forms such as 伺う and いただいた are also possible, for example in a diary.

§3Common mistakes
- Using a humble verb for the respected person's action. ✕ 先生、この写真をもう拝見しましたか。 → ○ 先生、この写真をもうご覧になりましたか。 ✕ どうぞいただいてください。 → ○ どうぞ召し上がってください。 For the other person's action, use honorific verbs.
- Using the wrong particle or ending with 申す. ✕ リンを申します / ✕ リンと申しです → ○ リンと申します. 申す is a verb that replaces 言う, so the name takes と, just as in リンと言います.
- Using 伺う when no respected person is involved. 伺う lowers your action toward the person you visit or ask, so it needs such a person: ○ 先生のお宅に伺います. For going somewhere with no such person, use 参ります: ✕ 来月、国へ伺います → ○ 来月、国へ参ります (or simply 帰ります).
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- Special honorific verbs (いらっしゃる, 召し上がる, おっしゃる ...)
- Humble verbs are for your own action; honorific verbs are for the respected person's action. 行く: 私が参ります / 先生がいらっしゃいます. 言う: 私が申します / 先生がおっしゃいます. 食べる: 私がいただきます / 先生が召し上がります. 見る: 私が拝見します / 先生がご覧になります. Learn them as pairs.
- お〜する/ご〜する (regular humble pattern)
- お〜する is the regular way to make a humble verb: 持つ → お持ちする, 案内する → ご案内する. Verbs that have a special humble verb normally use it instead: 見る is 拝見します, not ✕ お見します; 言う is 申します, not ✕ お言いします. For 会う, both お会いします and the special お目にかかります are used.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar-form questions, humble and honorific verbs appear together as choices (参ります / いらっしゃいます, 拝見します / ご覧になります). If the subject is 私 or the speaker's family, choose the humble verb. Self-introduction phrases such as 〜と申します and 〜から参りました are common in listening. In reading, 〜ております and 存じません in letters and e-mails simply mean 〜ています and 知りません, so do not be confused by the form.
