〜(さ)せていただく

させていただく

humbly do (with your permission)

〜(さ)せていただく is the humble form of 〜(さ)せてもらう. The speaker talks about his or her own action in a humble way, as something done with the listener's permission or thanks to the listener's kindness. It is common in business, in shops, and in speeches: to announce what you are going to do (始めさせていただきます), to report what you were allowed to do, and to ask for permission politely. The person who does the action is always the speaker (or the speaker's side).

それでは、会議を始めさせていただきます。

それでは、かいぎをはじめさせていただきます。

Well then, allow me to begin the meeting.

Structure

Causative form in the て form + いただく. Group I: 読む → 読ませていただく, 休む → 休ませていただく. Group II: 始める → 始めさせていただく. Group III: する → させていただく (説明させていただく), 来る → 来させていただく (こさせていただく). It is mostly used in the ます form: 〜(さ)せていただきます. Request: 〜(さ)せていただけますか / 〜(さ)せていただけませんか / 〜(さ)せていただきたいのですが.

Common mistakes

3
  • Adding an extra さ to Group I verbs. ✗ 帰らさせていただきます ✗ 書かさせていただきます → ○ 帰らせていただきます ○ 書かせていただきます. Group I verbs take 〜せる; さ appears only with Group II verbs (始めさせて), する (させて), and 来る (来させて).
  • Using it for the action of the person you respect. It is a humble form, so the action must be the speaker's own. ✗ 先生、どうぞ座らせていただいてください。 → ○ 先生、どうぞお座りください。 For the other person's action, use respectful forms such as お〜になる or お〜ください.
  • Using it everywhere to sound polite. When nobody's permission or kindness is involved, many Japanese people feel it is too much. △ 私は東京に住ませていただいております。 → ○ 私は東京に住んでおります。 Use it when your action depends on, or affects, the listener.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜(さ)せてもらう (be allowed to do; plain, not humble)
The meaning is the same, but the level of politeness is different. 〜(さ)せてもらう is used with family, friends, or when talking about them: 兄のパソコンを使わせてもらった (My brother let me use his computer). 〜(さ)せていただく uses the humble verb いただく, so it is used toward customers, bosses, and teachers: 先生のパソコンを使わせていただいた (The teacher kindly let me use his computer).
お〜する/ご〜する (humble: I do ... for you)
Both are humble ways to talk about your own action. お〜する / ご〜する is for an action you do for the listener or toward the listener: 駅までお送りします (I will take you to the station). 〜(さ)せていただく adds the idea 'with your permission', so it also fits actions that are mainly for yourself: 今日はこれで帰らせていただきます (I will go home now, with your permission).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, 〜(さ)せていただく is a choice together with 〜ていただく, 〜てくださる, and 〜(さ)せてくださる, so first decide who does the action: with 〜(さ)せていただく it is the speaker. It is tested in business settings (a request to a boss, a shop notice, the start of a speech). In sentence-ordering questions, remember the order: causative て form + いただき + ます / たいのですが. In reading passages such as notices and e-mails, 閉店させていただきます or 変更させていただきます tells you what the shop or company is going to do.
