〜(さ)せてもらう/〜(さ)せてくれる
させてもらう/させてくれる
be allowed to do / someone kindly lets me do
This pattern joins the causative ('let someone do') with もらう / くれる ('receive / give a favor'). It means that someone allows me to do what I want to do, and I feel thankful for it. With もらう, I am the subject: I receive the permission. With くれる, the person who allows it is the subject. The action itself is always done by me (or someone on my side), not by the person who gives permission.
熱があったので、今日は早く帰らせてもらいました。
ねつがあったので、きょうははやくかえらせてもらいました。
I had a fever, so I was allowed to go home early today.
Structure
Causative form in the て form + もらう / くれる. Group I: 帰る → 帰らせて, 使う → 使わせて. Group II: 食べる → 食べさせて. Group III: する → させて, 来る → 来させて (こさせて). 〜(さ)せてもらう: (私は) person に 〜(さ)せてもらう; the subject is the one who does the action. 〜(さ)せてくれる: person が (私に / 私を) 〜(さ)せてくれる; the subject is the one who gives permission. Request: 〜(さ)せてもらえますか / 〜(さ)せてもらえませんか.

Common mistakes
3
- Mixing up the subject of もらう and くれる. ✗ 父は私に留学させてもらった。 (to mean 'my father let me study abroad') ✗ 私は父に留学させてくれた。 → ○ 私は父に留学させてもらった。 ○ 父は私を留学させてくれた。 With もらう the subject is the person who does the action; with くれる the subject is the person who allows it.
- Dropping the causative, which changes who does the action. 先生に帰ってもらった means 'I had the teacher go home' (the teacher went home). To say that you went home with the teacher's permission: ○ 先生に帰らせてもらった。
- Adding an extra さ to Group I verbs. ✗ 帰らさせてもらう ✗ 読まさせてもらう → ○ 帰らせてもらう ○ 読ませてもらう. Group I verbs take 〜せる (ない-form stem + せる); 〜させる is for Group II verbs (食べさせる), する (させる), and 来る (来させる).

- 〜てもらう (have someone do something for me)
- In 〜てもらう, the other person does the action for me: 友だちに写真を撮ってもらった (My friend took a photo for me). In 〜(さ)せてもらう, I do the action, and the other person only gives permission: 友だちのカメラで写真を撮らせてもらった (My friend let me take photos with his camera). Ask yourself: who really does the action?
- causative passive (be made to do)
- Both start from the causative, but the feeling is opposite. 〜(さ)せられる is for something you did not want to do: 子どものころ、母に毎日ピアノを練習させられた (As a child I was made to practice the piano every day by my mother). 〜(さ)せてもらう is for something you wanted to do and are thankful for: 子どものころ、母にピアノを習わせてもらった (As a child my mother let me take piano lessons).
How this shows up on the JLPT
N3 grammar questions often give four forms made from one verb, for example 休んでもらう, 休ませてもらう, 休ませてくれる, and 休まされる. First decide who does the action, then look at the subject and the particles (私は〜に → もらう; 〜は私に / 私を → くれる). In sentence-ordering questions, the causative て form comes right before もらう / くれる. In listening and reading, 〜させてもらえませんか is a polite way to ask for permission, so the speaker is the one who wants to act.
