〜(さ)せる(感情・誘発)

させる

causative of emotion: make someone feel (worry, laugh, cry ...)

With verbs of emotion, the causative form does not mean 'order' or 'allow'. It means that a person, an action, or an event is the cause of someone's feeling: 'A makes B worry / laugh / cry / angry / happy'. Nobody is forcing anyone; the feeling comes up naturally as a result. It is often used with 〜てしまう for regret and with 〜たい / 〜たくない for what you want to do for other people.

子どものころ、よく病気をして両親を心配させました。

こどものころ、よくびょうきをしてりょうしんをしんぱいさせました。

When I was a child, I was often sick and made my parents worry.

Structure

Person + を + causative form of a verb of emotion. Group I: 笑う → 笑わせる, 泣く → 泣かせる, 怒る → 怒らせる, 喜ぶ → 喜ばせる, 悲しむ → 悲しませる, 驚く → 驚かせる, 困る → 困らせる. Group III (する verbs): 心配する → 心配させる, びっくりする → びっくりさせる, がっかりする → がっかりさせる, 安心する → 安心させる. The person who has the feeling takes を.

Common mistakes

3
  • Forgetting the causative form, which changes who has the feeling. 私は母を心配した means 'I worried about my mother' (I had the feeling). To say 'I made my mother worry', use the causative: ○ 私は母を心配させた。 In the same way, ✗ 冗談を言ってみんなを笑った。 → ○ 冗談を言ってみんなを笑わせた。
  • Using に for the person who feels the emotion. ✗ 彼は冗談を言って、友だちに笑わせた。 → ○ 彼は冗談を言って、友だちを笑わせた。 In this pattern the verbs of emotion (笑う, 泣く, 怒る, 驚く and so on) are used without an object of their own, so the person who feels takes を.
  • Making the causative from an adjective. ✗ 母をうれしいさせたい。 ✗ 友だちを悲しいさせた。 → ○ 母を喜ばせたい。 ○ 友だちを悲しませた。 Use the verb of emotion (喜ぶ, 悲しむ), not the adjective (うれしい, 悲しい).

How it's different from similar grammar

2
causative form (make / let someone do)
The form is the same, but the basic causative is about an action that someone is ordered or allowed to do: 母は弟に部屋を掃除させた (My mother made my brother clean the room). With a verb of emotion, there is no order or permission; the subject is simply the cause of the feeling: 弟は悪い点を取って、母をがっかりさせた (My brother got a bad score and disappointed my mother). The cause can also be a thing or an event, not only a person.
〜てしまう (end up doing, with regret)
〜てしまう alone shows regret about your own action: 友だちの前で泣いてしまった (I ended up crying in front of my friend; I am the one who cried). The causative of emotion changes the person who feels: 友だちを泣かせてしまった (I ended up making my friend cry; my friend is the one who cried). The two are often used together to say sorry for someone's feeling.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, this use is tested in two ways. First, the particle: the person who feels takes を (親を心配させる). Second, the verb form: you choose between 心配する, 心配させる, 心配される, and 心配させられる, so decide who has the feeling and who is the cause. Set phrases such as 心配させてしまってすみません and 〜を喜ばせたい are common. In reading passages, it helps you answer 'Who felt this way, and why?'.
