This pattern asks the listener to allow the speaker's own action. The causative (させる) means 'let me do', and てください turns it into a request, so the person who acts is the speaker, not the listener. 〜させていただけませんか is more polite and is used with a boss, a teacher or a customer. 〜させていただきます politely announces what you are going to do, as something the other person allows.
§1Structure
Causative verb in the て-form + ください (please let me) / いただけませんか (could you please let me, more polite) / いただきます (I will do it, with your permission; humble). Causative て-form: Group I 使う → 使わせて, 休む → 休ませて; Group II 食べる → 食べさせて; Group III する → させて, 来る → 来させて (こさせて). In casual speech, 〜させて alone is used. The person who does the action is the speaker, and can be marked with に (わたしに).

§3Common mistakes
- Using 〜てください when you want permission for your own action. 早く帰ってください tells the listener to go home early. When you are the one who wants to leave, use the causative: 早く帰らせてください.
- Adding an extra さ to Group I verbs. 休まさせてください and 読まさせてください are wrong. Group I verbs take せる, so the correct forms are 休ませてください and 読ませてください. させて is used with Group II verbs, する and 来る (食べさせてください, 説明させてください).
- Marking yourself with が. わたしがやらせてください is wrong, because in a causative sentence the person who does the action takes に. Say わたしにやらせてください.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- てください (please do, the listener acts)
- The difference is who does the action. With 〜てください, the listener acts: この資料をコピーしてください (Please copy this document). With 〜させてください, the speaker acts and the listener only gives permission: この資料をコピーさせてください (Please let me copy this document).
- てもいいですか (may I ...?)
- Both ask for permission. 〜てもいいですか is a simple question about whether something is allowed, and it is fine with friends or for small things: 窓を開けてもいいですか. 〜させてください and 〜させていただけませんか show the speaker's strong wish and treat the permission as a favor, so they fit requests to a boss or teacher: 来週の金曜日、休ませていただけませんか.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar and listening questions, the main point is who acts. If the speaker wants to do something (go home, rest, use something, try something), the answer has the causative: 〜させてください. If the speaker wants the listener to do it, the answer is 〜てください or 〜ていただけませんか. Workplace conversations in listening often use 〜させていただけませんか and 〜させていただきます, so get used to hearing the long form. Also check the verb group so that you can spot wrong forms such as 休まさせて.
§6Quick check (3 questions)

そのにもつはおもそうですね。わたしに__ください。
2. An employee says to the manager: 「すみません、今日は早く帰らせていただけませんか。」 Who wants to go home early?
すみません、きょうははやくかえらせていただけませんか。
