〜てもらう means that the subject receives the benefit of another person's action. In English it is often 'have someone do ...' or simply 'someone did ... for me'. The person who does the action is not the subject; it is the person marked with に. The pattern shows gratitude, and it often suggests that the receiver asked for the action.
§1Structure
[Receiver] は [doer] に verb て-form + もらう (polite: 〜てもらいます). The subject is the person who gets the benefit, usually 'I' or someone on my side, and it is often left out. The person who does the action is marked with に. Request forms use the potential: 〜てもらえますか/〜てもらえませんか.

§3Common mistakes
- Marking the doer with が: ✗ 友だちが手伝ってもらいました (for 'My friend helped me'). With もらう, the subject is the receiver, and the doer takes に: ○ (私は) 友だちに手伝ってもらいました. If you want the friend to be the subject, change the verb to くれる: ○ 友だちが手伝ってくれました.
- Misreading who does the action. In 私は母に買い物に行ってもらいました, the person who went shopping is the mother, not 'I'. The verb in the て-form is always the action of the person marked with に.
- Making 'I' the doer: ✗ リンさんは私に宿題を手伝ってもらいました. Japanese does not usually describe my own action as something another person 'received' from me. Say it from my side with 〜てあげる: ○ 私はリンさんの宿題を手伝ってあげました.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てくれる (someone does something for me)
- Both can describe the same event with gratitude, but the subject is different. With 〜てくれる the doer is the subject (が/は): 友だちが傘を貸してくれました (My friend lent me an umbrella). With 〜てもらう the receiver is the subject and the doer takes に: 友だちに傘を貸してもらいました (I had my friend lend me an umbrella). 〜てくれる often suggests the person did it out of kindness; 〜てもらう often suggests that I asked for it.
- 〜ていただく (humble form of 〜てもらう)
- The meaning is the same, but the level of politeness is different. 〜てもらう is used when the doer is a friend, a family member or someone equal: 姉に英語を教えてもらいました. When the doer is a teacher, a boss or a customer, the humble 〜ていただく is used: 先生に英語を教えていただきました. In the same way, the request 〜てもらえませんか becomes 〜ていただけませんか.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
The most common N4 question is the particle: (私は) 友だち__手伝ってもらいました → に. Another type gives you a sentence with 〜てくれる and asks for the sentence with the same meaning using 〜てもらう, so practice changing the subject and the particle. In reading and listening, questions like 'Who did the action?' depend on this: with 〜てもらう, the doer is the person before に.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 私は姉__英語の宿題を見てもらいました。
わたしはあね__えいごのしゅくだいをみてもらいました。
2. 「私は田中さんに車で空港まで送ってもらいました。」 Who drove the car?
わたしはたなかさんにくるまでくうこうまでおくってもらいました。
3. Which sentence has the same meaning as 「友だちが私にノートを見せてくれました。」?
ともだちがわたしにノートをみせてくれました。
