あげます means 'give' and もらいます means 'receive'. The subject of あげます is the giver, and the subject of もらいます is the receiver. あげます is not used when the receiver is 'me': for 'someone gives me something', Japanese uses くれます, or you make yourself the subject with もらいます. This page is about giving and receiving things; doing an action for someone (〜てあげる / 〜てもらう) is N4.
§1Structure
[Giver] は [receiver] に [thing] を あげます. / [Receiver] は [giver] に / から [thing] を もらいます. With あげます, に marks the receiver. With もらいます, に or から marks the giver. When the giver is a school, a company or another organization, から is used.

§3Common mistakes
- Using あげます when the receiver is 'me'. ✕「友だちはわたしにプレゼントをあげました。」 Say 「友だちはわたしにプレゼントをくれました。」 or 「わたしは友だちにプレゼントをもらいました。」
- Reading に as 'to' every time. With もらいます, に marks the giver, not the receiver. 「わたしは田中さんに本をもらいました。」 means 'I received a book FROM Mr. Tanaka', not 'I gave a book to Mr. Tanaka'. If this is confusing, use から: 「田中さんから本をもらいました。」
- Marking the thing with the wrong particle. The thing that moves takes を, and the person takes に: ✕「母を花にあげました。」 → 「母に花をあげました。」
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- くれます (someone gives to me)
- Both あげます and くれます mean 'give', but the direction is different. あげます is used when I give to someone, or when another person gives to a third person: 「わたしはリンさんに本をあげました。」 くれます is used when someone gives to me (or to my family): 「リンさんはわたしに本をくれました。」 The same event with もらいます: 「わたしはリンさんに本をもらいました。」
- 〜てあげる / 〜てもらう (doing an action for someone)
- あげます / もらいます alone are about things: 「友だちに辞書をもらいました。」 (I got a dictionary from my friend.) With the て-form of a verb, they are about actions done as a favor: 「友だちに辞書を貸してもらいました。」 (My friend kindly lent me a dictionary.) The て-form patterns are studied at N4.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N5 Grammar Mondai 1, the blank is often the particle (に / から / を) or the verb itself (あげました / もらいました). First find the subject marked by は, and then decide which way the thing moves. In Mondai 2 (sentence building), make the pairs 'person + に' and 'thing + を' first. In Reading and Listening, questions like 'Who has the book now?' check whether you understood that the に-person with もらいます is the giver.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle for the blank: わたしは姉__セーターをもらいました。
わたしはあね__セーターをもらいました。
2. 「リンさんは田中さんに本をもらいました。」 Who has the book now?
リンさんはたなかさんにほんをもらいました。
3. Which sentence is correct?
