〜てあげる means that someone does an action as a favor for another person. It is the 'action' version of あげる (give): you give the benefit of the action. Because it stresses your own kindness, it is used about friends, family and people below you. Said directly to a superior, it can sound rude, so offers to a superior use 〜ましょうか or お〜します instead.
§1Structure
[Doer] は [person] に [thing] を verb て-form + あげる (polite: 〜てあげます). The doer is 'I' or another person; the person who gets the favor is never 'me'. The particle for that person depends on the verb: に with verbs that take に (友だちに本を貸してあげる, 子どもに絵本を読んであげる), を with verbs like 送る, 案内する, 手伝う (友だちを駅まで送ってあげる), and の when you do something to the person's thing (友だちの荷物を持ってあげる).
§2Examples
私は妹に自転車を貸してあげました。
わたしはいもうとにじてんしゃをかしてあげました。
I lent my bicycle to my younger sister.
友だちを駅まで送ってあげた。
ともだちをえきまでおくってあげた。
I took my friend to the station.
リンさんは田中さんの荷物を持ってあげました。
リンさんはたなかさんのにもつをもってあげました。
Linh carried Mr. Tanaka's luggage for him.
だれも田中さんに本当のことを教えてあげなかった。
だれもたなかさんにほんとうのことをおしえてあげなかった。
Nobody told Mr. Tanaka the truth.
写真を撮ってあげましょうか。
しゃしんをとってあげましょうか。
Shall I take a picture for you?
毎晩、子どもに絵本を読んであげます。
まいばん、こどもにえほんをよんであげます。
Every night I read a picture book to my child.
道に迷っている人に、地図をかいてあげました。
みちにまよっているひとに、ちずをかいてあげました。
I drew a map for a person who was lost.
友だちが引っ越すとき、手伝ってあげるつもりだ。
ともだちがひっこすとき、てつだってあげるつもりだ。
When my friend moves, I plan to help with the move.
§3Common mistakes
- Using 〜てあげる when the favor comes to me: ✗ 友だちが私に辞書を貸してあげました. When the receiver is 'I' or someone on my side, use 〜てくれる: ○ 友だちが私に辞書を貸してくれました.
- Saying 〜てあげます directly to a teacher, a boss or a customer: 先生、かばんを持ってあげます. It sounds as if you are doing the person a big favor, so it can be rude. Offer help with 〜ましょうか or the humble form: ○ 先生、かばんを持ちましょうか/お持ちします.
- Always marking the person with に: ✗ 友だちに駅まで送ってあげました. The particle comes from the main verb. 送る takes を, so ○ 友だちを駅まで送ってあげました. When you handle the person's belongings, の is natural: ○ 友だちの荷物を持ってあげました.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てくれる (someone does something for me)
- The direction is different. With 〜てあげる, the favor goes away from the speaker: from me to another person, or from one other person to another. 私はリンさんに町を案内してあげました (I showed Linh around the town). With 〜てくれる, the favor comes to the speaker or the speaker's family: リンさんは私に町を案内してくれました (Linh showed me around the town).
- 〜ましょうか (offering help)
- Both can offer help, but 〜てあげましょうか puts your kindness into words, so it is kept for friends, children and people close to you: 漢字の読み方を教えてあげようか (Shall I tell you how to read the kanji?). To a superior or a stranger you want to be polite to, 〜ましょうか alone is safer, because it offers the action without talking about a favor: 窓を開けましょうか (Shall I open the window?).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N4 grammar questions give you あげる/くれる/もらう after a て-form and ask you to choose. Find who does the action and who gets the benefit: if the benefit goes to 'me', あげる is wrong. Particle questions are also common (友だち__送ってあげる → を). In reading and listening, 〜てあげる tells you that the subject is the helper, which helps you answer 'who did what for whom'.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 雨だったので、私はリンさん__車で家まで送ってあげました。
あめだったので、わたしはリンさん__くるまでいえまでおくってあげました。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. Your teacher is carrying a heavy bag, and you want to offer help politely. What do you say?
