These three verbs are the polite partners of もらう, くれる and あげる. They are used when the other person is someone you should respect, such as a teacher, a boss or a customer. The direction of giving does not change: いただく = I receive, くださる = a superior gives to me, さしあげる = I give to a superior. They are not used about your own family when you talk to people outside the family.
§1Structure
いただく (humble form of もらう): 私は [superior] に/から [thing] を いただきます. くださる (honorific form of くれる): [superior] が/は (私に) [thing] を くださいます. さしあげる (humble form of あげる): 私は [superior] に [thing] を さしあげます. The ます-form of くださる is irregular: くださいます (not くださります). The て-form is くださって, and the plain past is くださった.

§3Common mistakes
- Conjugating くださる like a regular verb: ✗ 先生が本をくださりました. In the ます-form, り changes to い: ○ くださいます, ○ くださいました, ○ くださいませんか. (The plain forms are regular: くださらない, くださった, くださって.)
- Mixing up the subject and the verb: ✗ 先生が私に本をいただきました, ✗ 私は先生に本をくださいました. The subject of いただく is the receiver (私), and the subject of くださる is the giver (先生): ○ 私は先生に本をいただきました, ○ 先生が私に本をくださいました.
- Using these verbs for your own family when you talk to someone outside the family: ✗ 母がこのかばんをくださいました, ✗ 父に時計をいただきました. Your family is on your side, so use the plain verbs: ○ 母がこのかばんをくれました, ○ 父に時計をもらいました.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- あげます / もらいます (plain 'give' and 'receive')
- The direction is the same; only the level of respect is different. With a friend or a family member: 友だちにチョコレートをもらいました/友だちに花をあげました. With a superior: 先生にチョコレートをいただきました/先生に花をさしあげました. いただく and さしあげる are humble verbs: they lower the speaker's side, and in this way they show respect to the other person.
- くれます (someone gives to me)
- Both mean that someone gives something to me or to my side, and the giver is the subject. くれます is used for friends, family and people equal to or below you: 友だちが地図をくれました. くださいます is an honorific verb: it raises the giver, so it is used for a teacher, a boss or a customer: 先生が地図をくださいました. The request form 〜をください comes from this verb.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N4 grammar questions give a sentence with a superior (先生, 社長, 部長) and ask you to choose among いただきました, くださいました and さしあげました. Look at the particles: 先生が → くださいました; 私は先生に + I receive → いただきました; 私は先生に + I give → さしあげました. The form くださいます (not くださります) is also tested. In reading and listening, these verbs tell you that the other person is socially above the speaker.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 卒業のとき、先生が私にこのペンを__。
そつぎょうのとき、せんせいがわたしにこのペンを__。
2. Which verb do you use when you give a present to your teacher and you want to be humble?
3. Which sentence correctly says 'I received a letter from the company president'?
