JLPT N4

お〜する/ご〜する

お〜する/ご〜する

Humble verb pattern (I do something for you)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

With お〜する the speaker lowers their own action to show respect for the person the action is for or directed to: a teacher, a boss, or a customer. The doer is always the speaker or someone on the speaker's side. It is used only when the action involves the respected person, for example carrying their bag, sending them something, or telling them something.

§1Structure

お + verb ます-stem + する (持ちます → お持ちする, 送ります → お送りする). For する-verbs made from a noun of Chinese origin: ご + noun + する (案内する → ご案内する, 説明する → ご説明する, 連絡する → ご連絡する). A few everyday nouns take お instead (お電話する). する conjugates as usual (します, しません, しました, した, しています). Replacing する with いたす makes it even more humble: お持ちいたします, ご案内いたします. Verbs that have a special humble verb normally use that instead (見る → 拝見する, 言う → 申す).

§2Examples

  • お荷物をお持ちします。

    おにもつをおもちします。

    I will carry your luggage.

  • 駅まで車でお送りしましょうか。

    えきまでくるまでおおくりしましょうか。

    あした、こちらからごれんらくします。

    We will contact you tomorrow.

Yesterday I borrowed an umbrella from my teacher.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using the humble pattern for the respected person's action. ✕ 先生が荷物をお持ちしました (when you want to respect the teacher) → ○ 先生が荷物をお持ちになりました. ✕ どうぞお待ちしてください → ○ どうぞお待ちください. お〜する is only for what the speaker's side does.
  • Using it for actions that have nothing to do with the respected person. ✕ 私は毎朝6時にお起きします。 ✕ 私はきのう早くお寝しました。 Getting up and going to bed are not done for or toward anyone, so just say 起きます and 寝ました.
  • Putting the wrong verb form after お. ✕ お持つします / ✕ お持ってします → ○ お持ちします. Always use the ます-stem, and use ご (not お) with most nouns of Chinese origin: ○ ご説明します, ✕ お説明します.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

お〜になる (honorific pattern)
The shapes are similar, but the doer is opposite. お〜する: I do it — 私が先生に写真をお送りします (I will send the photos to the teacher). お〜になる: the respected person does it — 先生が写真をお送りになります (The teacher will send the photos). Before choosing, always ask yourself who does the action.
〜てあげる (do something for someone)
Both describe doing something for another person. 〜てあげる stresses that you are doing a favor, so it can sound rude when said directly to a superior: 先生、かばんを持ってあげます sounds like you are looking down on the teacher. To a superior or a customer, use the humble pattern: 先生、かばんをお持ちします. 〜てあげる is fine for friends, family, and children.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N4 grammar-form questions often give お〜します, お〜になります and お〜ください as choices for the same blank. If the subject is 私 or the speaker is offering help (often with 〜ましょうか), choose お〜します. In sentence-ordering questions, remember the order お + ます-stem + します/いたします. In listening, お〜します from a shop clerk or receptionist tells you that the clerk, not the customer, will do the action.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. You offer to carry your teacher's heavy bag. Choose the correct form: 先生、重そうですね。そのかばん、私が__。

    せんせい、おもそうですね。そのかばん、わたしが__。

  • 2. Who makes the phone call in this sentence? 「あとで先生にお電話します。」

    あとでせんせいにおでんわします。

  • 3. Which sentence uses the humble pattern correctly?
