お〜になる raises the person who does the action: a teacher, a boss, a customer, or someone you do not know well. It is more respectful than the れる/られる honorific. You never use it for your own actions; for those, use the humble pattern お〜する.
§1Structure
お + verb ます-stem + になる (帰ります → お帰りになる, 書きます → お書きになる). For する-verbs made from a noun of Chinese origin: ご + noun + になる (利用する → ご利用になる, 出席する → ご出席になる). になる conjugates like the ordinary verb なる (なります, なりません, なりました, なった, なっている). Verbs whose ます-stem is a single syllable, such as 見ます, います, 寝ます, 着ます, and also 来ます and します, do not normally take this pattern; they use special honorific verbs instead (ご覧になる, いらっしゃる, なさる).
§2Examples

せんせいがおかきになったほんをよみました。

§3Common mistakes
- Using お〜になる for your own action. ✕ 私がお持ちになります。 → ○ 私がお持ちします。 お〜になる is for the other person's action; for your own action toward that person, use the humble お〜する.
- Putting the wrong verb form between お and になる. ✕ お読むになります / ✕ お読んでになります → ○ お読みになります. Always use the ます-stem.
- Forcing the pattern onto verbs that have a special honorific verb, or adding れる on top. ✕ お見になります → ○ ご覧になります. ✕ お来になります → ○ いらっしゃいます. ✕ お帰りになられます → ○ お帰りになります.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- お〜する/ご〜する (humble pattern)
- The two patterns look alike, but the doer is different. お〜になる: the respected person does it — 先生が荷物をお持ちになります (The teacher will carry the bag). お〜する: the speaker does it for the respected person — 私が荷物をお持ちします (I will carry the bag for you).
- 〜れる/〜られる (light honorific)
- Both respect the doer. お〜になる is more polite and formal: 先生はもうお帰りになりました. The れる/られる form is lighter and can be made from almost any verb, including する-verbs and 来る: 先生はもう帰られました, 先生は来られました.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N4 grammar-form questions often put お〜になる, お〜します and お〜ください in the same set of choices. Decide first who does the action: the respected person (お〜になる), the speaker (お〜します), or a request to the listener (お〜ください). In sentence-ordering questions, remember the fixed order お + ます-stem + に + なります. In listening, hearing お〜になる tells you the action belongs to the customer or superior, not to the speaker.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. You respectfully ask your teacher whether he has already read the newspaper. Choose the correct form: 先生はこの新聞をもう__か。
せんせいはこのしんぶんをもう__か。
2. Who made the cake in this sentence? 「これは田中さんがお作りになったケーキです。」
これはたなかさんがおつくりになったケーキです。
3. Which sentence is correct?
