お〜ください is a more respectful version of 〜てください. Staff use it to customers, and you hear it in stations, shops, hotels, and written notices. It is mostly used to invite or guide the listener politely. To ask someone politely not to do something, 〜ないでください or a fixed phrase like おやめください is used.
§1Structure
お + verb ます-stem + ください (待ちます → お待ちください, 座ります → お座りください). For する-verbs made from a noun of Chinese origin: ご + noun + ください (連絡する → ご連絡ください, 注意する → ご注意ください). There is no て in this pattern. Verbs whose ます-stem is a single syllable (見ます, います, 来ます, します) do not normally take it; use ご覧ください for 見る, and いらっしゃってください or お越しください for 来る. A few fixed expressions are also common, such as おやめください (please stop / please don't).

§3Common mistakes
- Keeping the て-form inside the pattern. ✕ お待ってください / ✕ お待ちてください → ○ お待ちください. The pattern is お + ます-stem + ください, with no て.
- Using the pattern with 見る or 来る. ✕ お見ください → ○ ご覧ください. ✕ お来ください → ○ いらっしゃってください / ○ お越しください.
- Adding して to a ご-noun. ✕ ご連絡してください is considered incorrect keigo, because ご〜する is a humble pattern for the speaker's own action. → ○ ご連絡ください. Also note that most nouns of Chinese origin take ご, but a few everyday words take お, such as お電話ください.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てください (ordinary polite request)
- Both ask the listener to do something. 〜てください is the everyday polite request and can be used with any verb: ちょっと待ってください. お〜ください is more respectful and is typical of staff speaking to customers and of public announcements: しばらくお待ちください. Between friends or classmates, お〜ください sounds too formal.
- 〜をください (please give me ...)
- Noun + をください asks for a thing: お水をください (Please give me some water). お + ます-stem + ください asks for an action: お飲みください (Please drink). In お水をください the お belongs to the noun 水; in お飲みください the お is part of the honorific pattern.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N4 grammar-form questions test the shape: the blank comes after お and you must choose the ます-stem (お待ち) rather than the て-form or dictionary form. The pattern also appears in choices next to お〜になります and お〜します, so check whether the sentence is a request to the listener. In listening and in information-retrieval reading (notices, signs, announcements), you need to understand instructions like ご注意ください and お並びください quickly.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. A receptionist politely offers a pen to a visitor. Choose the correct form: どうぞ、こちらのペンを__。
どうぞ、こちらのペンを__。
2. Which is the correct honorific way to say 'Please look at this'?
3. Which sentence is a correct honorific request?
