JLPT N4

〜ございます/〜でございます

ございます/でございます

Extra-polite あります / です

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

ございます and でございます are very polite forms of あります and です. They do not raise or lower any person; they simply make the speech more polite toward the listener. Shop staff, hotel staff, and announcers use them with customers. でございます is normally used about the speaker's own side or about things, not about the listener.

§1Structure

ございます replaces あります: noun + が/は + ございます, place + に + ございます. Negative: ございません. Past: ございました. でございます replaces です: noun + でございます, な-adjective + でございます. Negative: ではございません. Past: でございました. In modern everyday Japanese it is not attached directly to い-adjectives; greetings like ありがとうございます and おはようございます are fixed expressions. There is no plain form in normal use.

§2Examples

  • お手洗いは2階にございます。

    おてあらいはにかいにございます。

The restroom is on the second floor.

  • こちらが受付でございます。

    こちらがうけつけでございます。

    This is the reception desk.

  • はい、田中でございます。

    はい、たなかでございます。

    Hello, this is Tanaka speaking.

  • 申し訳ありませんが、その色はございません。

    もうしわけありませんが、そのいろはございません。

I am very sorry, but we do not have that color.

  • 何かご質問はございますか。

    なにかごしつもんはございますか。

    Do you have any questions?

  • あちらは入口ではございません。

    あちらはいりぐちではございません。

    That is not the entrance.

  • 先週、社長からお電話がございました。

    せんしゅう、しゃちょうからおでんわがございました。

Last week there was a phone call from the president.

  • ホテルの人は「こちらのお部屋のほうが静かでございます」と言った。

    ホテルのひとは「こちらのおへやのほうがしずかでございます」といった。

The hotel clerk said, "This room is quieter."

§3Common mistakes

  • Mixing up ございます (= あります) and でございます (= です). ✕ こちらが受付ございます → ○ こちらが受付でございます (This is the reception). ✕ お手洗いは2階にでございます → ○ お手洗いは2階にございます (The restroom is on the second floor). Think of the ordinary sentence first, then replace あります or です.
  • Using ございます for people. ございます stands for あります, which is for things. For a person on your own side use おります, and for a respected person use いらっしゃいます: ✕ 係の者がございます → ○ 係の者がおります.
  • Using でございます about the listener or a respected person. ✕ 田中様でございますか → ○ 田中様でいらっしゃいますか (Are you Mr./Ms. Tanaka?). でございます is normally for yourself, your side, or things: ○ 私が田中でございます.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜があります/〜がいます (there is / there are)
ございます has the same meaning as あります and differs only in politeness. Everyday polite speech: 駐車場は店の後ろにあります. A clerk speaking to a customer: 駐車場は店の後ろにございます. います (for people and animals) has no ございます form; its humble form is おります and its honorific form is いらっしゃいます.
Special honorific verbs (でいらっしゃる)
でございます only makes the sentence more polite; it does not raise a person. To say です about a respected person, the honorific でいらっしゃいます is used: こちらは山田先生でいらっしゃいます (This is Professor Yamada). About yourself or a thing, use でございます: こちらは私の名刺でございます (This is my business card).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

At N4 you mainly need to understand this form, not produce it. It appears in listening (shops, hotels, stations, phone calls) and in information-retrieval reading such as notices to customers. Read ございます as あります and でございます as です, and the sentence becomes easy. In grammar-form questions, check the particle before the blank: に or が before the blank points to ございます, and a noun right before the blank points to でございます.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. A hotel clerk tells a guest where the elevator is. Choose the correct form: エレベーターはあちらに__。

    エレベーターはあちらに__。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. In 「会議室は5階にございます。」, ございます is the very polite form of which word?

    かいぎしつはごかいにございます。
