AはBです says that A is B, or that A belongs to the group B. は marks the topic, and です makes the sentence polite. です does not change with the person: 'I am', 'you are' and 'she is' are all です. Use it when you talk to people you do not know well, to teachers, and at work.
§1Structure
Noun 1 + は + Noun 2 + です. です comes at the end of the sentence. Question: 〜ですか. Negative: 〜じゃありません / 〜ではありません. Past: 〜でした. Plain (casual) form: 〜だ. い-adjectives and な-adjectives can also come before です to make a polite sentence (寒いです, 静かです).

§3Common mistakes
- Putting です in the middle of the sentence like English 'is' or Vietnamese 'là'. ✗ わたしはです学生 → ✓ わたしは学生です. は is not the word for 'is'; it only marks the topic. です comes after the second noun, at the end of the sentence.
- Making the past of an い-adjective with でした. ✗ きのうは寒いでした → ✓ きのうは寒かったです. でした is the past form for nouns and な-adjectives (休みでした, 静かでした). An い-adjective changes its own ending.
- Adding です after a verb in the ます form. ✗ あした行きますです → ✓ あした行きます. 〜ます is already polite, so です is not needed.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- だ (plain form)
- です and だ have the same meaning, but the style is different. です is polite: あしたは休みです (Tomorrow is a day off). だ is plain and is used with family and close friends, in a diary, and inside longer sentences: あしたは休みだ. Do not put だ after an い-adjective: ✗ 寒いだ → ✓ 寒い.
- あります / います (there is, to exist)
- English 'is' has two jobs, but Japanese uses different words. です says what something is: これは本です (This is a book). あります (things) and います (people, animals) say that something exists or where it is: つくえの上に本があります (There is a book on the desk), 教室に先生がいます (The teacher is in the classroom).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
〜は〜です is the base of many N5 questions. In Part 1 of the grammar section you choose the right ending from です, でした, じゃありません and ですか, so read the time word (きのう, あした) and the reply (はい / いいえ) carefully. In Part 2 (sentence building with ★), です or ですか is almost always the last piece, and は follows the first noun. In the listening section, a falling 〜です is a statement and a rising 〜ですか is a question.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. You want to say 'It was rainy yesterday.' Choose the word that fits the blank: きのうは雨__。
きのうはあめ__。
2. Which sentence correctly says 'Mr. Tanaka is a doctor'?
3. Choose the word that fits the blank: つくえの上に本が__。
つくえのうえにほんが__。
