でした is the past form of です. It is used after nouns and な-adjectives to say what something was or how it was. The past negative is じゃありませんでした: you add でした to the negative じゃありません. Verbs and い-adjectives have their own past forms (〜ました, 〜かったです), so でした is not used with them.
§1Structure
Noun + でした / な-adjective (without な) + でした: past affirmative. Noun / な-adjective + じゃありませんでした: past negative (more formal: ではありませんでした; in conversation じゃなかったです is also used). Question: 〜でしたか. Plain forms: 〜だった / 〜じゃなかった. い-adjectives do not use でした: their past is 〜かったです.

§3Common mistakes
- Using でした after an い-adjective: ✗ 昨日は暑いでした, ✗ 映画はおもしろいでした. An い-adjective makes its own past form: ○ 昨日は暑かったです, ○ 映画はおもしろかったです.
- Forgetting the past in a negative sentence: ✗ 昨日は休みじゃありません. When you talk about the past, the negative also needs でした: ○ 昨日は休みじゃありませんでした. The order cannot be changed either: ✗ 休みでしたじゃありません.
- Adding でした to a verb: ✗ 昨日、京都へ行きますでした. The past of a verb is 〜ました: ○ 昨日、京都へ行きました. Also do not keep な before でした: ✗ 静かなでした → ○ 静かでした.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜かったです (past of i-adjectives)
- Nouns and な-adjectives use でした: 昨日は暇でした (I was free yesterday). い-adjectives change い to かった and keep です: 昨日は忙しかったです (I was busy yesterday). The negatives are different too: 暇じゃありませんでした but 忙しくなかったです. If the word before the blank is an い-adjective, never choose でした.
- 〜ました (past of verbs)
- でした comes after a noun or な-adjective, and ました is the ending of a verb. Compare: 昨日は休みでした (Yesterday was a day off: 休み is a noun) and 昨日は会社を休みました (I took a day off from work yesterday: 休みます is a verb). The negatives are 休みじゃありませんでした and 休みませんでした.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N5 fill-in-the-blank questions, a time word such as きのう, 先週 or きょねん tells you that you need a past form. The choices usually mix でした, ました, かったです and です, so look at the word before the blank: noun or な-adjective → でした, verb → ました, い-adjective → かったです. In sentence-order questions, じゃありません and でした must stay in this order. In short reading passages about a trip or a weekend, でした shows that the writer is describing a past experience.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the best answer for the blank: A「昨日のテストは簡単でしたか。」B「いいえ、__。」
A「きのうのテストはかんたんでしたか。」B「いいえ、__。」
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. What does 「ここは前は公園でした。」 mean?
ここはまえはこうえんでした。
