な-adjectives are adjectives such as 静か, 元気, 便利, 有名 and 好き. They are called な-adjectives because they need な when they come before a noun. The word itself never changes; negative and past are shown by です, in the same way as with nouns. ではありません is more formal than じゃありません.
§1Structure
Polite: な-adjective + です (present) / じゃありません or ではありません (negative) / でした (past) / じゃありませんでした or ではありませんでした (past negative). Plain: 〜だ / 〜じゃない / 〜だった / 〜じゃなかった. Before a noun: な-adjective + な + noun (静かな町). At the end of a sentence there is no な: 静かです, not 静かなです.
§2Examples
この公園は静かです。
このこうえんはしずかです。
This park is quiet.
リンさんは親切な人です。
リンさんはしんせつなひとです。
Lin is a kind person.
私の部屋はあまりきれいじゃありません。
わたしのへやはあまりきれいじゃありません。
My room is not very clean.
先週は暇でした。
せんしゅうはひまでした。
I was free last week.
昨日の試験は簡単じゃありませんでした。
きのうのしけんはかんたんじゃありませんでした。
Yesterday's exam was not easy.
田中さんは元気ですか。
たなかさんはげんきですか。
Is Mr. Tanaka well?
京都は有名な町です。
きょうとはゆうめいなまちです。
Kyoto is a famous city.
「魚は好き?」「ううん、あまり好きじゃない。」
「さかなはすき?」「ううん、あまりすきじゃない。」
"Do you like fish?" "No, not very much."
§3Common mistakes
- Wrong use of な. Before a noun な is necessary, and の is not used: ✗ 親切人, ✗ 親切の人 → ○ 親切な人. But before です there is no な: ✗ この町は静かなです → ○ この町は静かです.
- Conjugating きれい, きらい or 有名(ゆうめい) like い-adjectives because they end in い: ✗ きれくないです, ✗ きれかったです. They are な-adjectives: ○ きれいじゃありません, ○ きれいでした, ○ きれいな花.
- Treating 好き, きらい and 上手 as verbs because 'like' is a verb in English: ✗ 私は音楽を好きます. In Japanese they are な-adjectives, and the thing you like takes が: ○ 私は音楽が好きです. Negative: 好きじゃありません.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- i-adjectives
- An い-adjective changes its own ending, while a な-adjective stays the same and です changes. Compare: この町はにぎやかです → にぎやかじゃありません → にぎやかでした, but この町は大きいです → 大きくないです → 大きかったです. Before a noun: にぎやかな町 (with な) but 大きい町 (nothing added). Do not mix the two patterns: ✗ にぎやかくないです, ✗ 大きいじゃありません.
- noun + です
- At the end of a sentence, nouns and な-adjectives conjugate in exactly the same way: 学生です / 学生じゃありません / 学生でした, and 元気です / 元気じゃありません / 元気でした. The difference appears before another noun: a noun takes の, and a な-adjective takes な. 病気の人 (a sick person: 病気 is a noun) but 元気な人 (a healthy, lively person: 元気 is a な-adjective).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N5 fill-in-the-blank questions often put a な-adjective before a noun and ask you to choose between な, の, い and nothing (しずか_へや). Other questions test the negative or past with wrong choices such as きれくない or ひまかったです, so remember that きれい, きらい and ゆうめい are な-adjectives. In sentence-order questions, な tells you that the next piece must be a noun.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the word for the blank: あの人は__先生です。
あのひとは__せんせいです。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. What does this sentence tell you? 「この町は前はにぎやかでしたが、今は静かです。」
このまちはまえはにぎやかでしたが、いまはしずかです。
