An い-adjective is an adjective whose dictionary form ends in い, such as 高い, おいしい or 忙しい. The adjective itself changes to show negative and past, so です after it never changes to でした or じゃありません. です only makes the sentence polite. An い-adjective can also go directly before a noun to describe it.
§1Structure
Polite: 〜いです (present) / 〜くないです or 〜くありません (negative) / 〜かったです (past) / 〜くなかったです or 〜くありませんでした (past negative). Plain: 〜い / 〜くない / 〜かった / 〜くなかった (no だ after them). Before a noun: 〜い + noun, with nothing in between (新しい本). To make the forms, take off the last い and add くない, かった or くなかった. いい is irregular: いいです → よくないです / よかったです / よくなかったです.

§3Common mistakes
- Making the past with でした: ✗ 楽しいでした. With an い-adjective the adjective itself changes and です stays the same: ○ 楽しかったです. でした is for nouns and な-adjectives (休みでした, 静かでした).
- Making the negative with じゃありません: ✗ 高いじゃありません. Change い to くない: ○ 高くないです or 高くありません. Do not keep the い either: ✗ 高いくないです.
- Conjugating いい like a regular adjective: ✗ いくないです, ✗ いかったです. All forms except いい itself are made from よい: ○ よくないです, ○ よかったです, ○ よくなかったです.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- na-adjectives
- な-adjectives do not change their own ending; です changes instead. Compare: 大きいです → 大きくないです → 大きかったです, but 静かです → 静かじゃありません → 静かでした. Before a noun, an い-adjective is used as it is (大きい部屋), while a な-adjective needs な (静かな部屋). Be careful: きれい, きらい and ゆうめい end in い but are な-adjectives, so the negative of きれいです is きれいじゃありません, not ✗ きれくないです.
- 〜くないです vs 〜くありません
- Both are correct polite negatives and mean the same: この本は高くないです = この本は高くありません (This book is not expensive). 〜くないです is more common in conversation; 〜くありません sounds a little more formal. The past forms are 高くなかったです and 高くありませんでした. Learn to recognize both, because either one can appear on the test.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N5 grammar section, fill-in-the-blank questions often give a time word such as きのう or 先週 and ask you to choose the right form, with wrong choices like あついでした or あつくないでした. Check the time word first, then look for 〜かったです or 〜くなかったです. Sentence-order questions test that the adjective goes directly before its noun (あたらしい → くるま). In reading passages, the tense of the adjective tells you whether the writer is talking about now or about the past.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the best answer for the blank: 昨日は天気が__。
きのうはてんきが__。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. Which word is NOT an い-adjective?
