どう・どんな

どう・どんな

how / what kind of

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

どう means 'how'. 〜はどうですか asks for someone's impression or about the condition of something, and the answer is usually an adjective (おもしろいです, 大変でした). どうですか is also used to offer or suggest something: お茶はどうですか (How about some tea?). どんな means 'what kind of' and asks for a description of the noun after it; the answer is usually adjective + noun (親切な人です).

§1Structure

Topic + は + どうですか (present) / どうでしたか (past); plain: 〜はどう? どう + verb: どう読みますか, どう思いますか. どんな + noun (+ ですか / + particle + verb): どんな人ですか, どんな映画を見ますか. At N5, どんな is followed by a noun. The polite word for どう is いかが (いかがですか).

§2Examples

  • 「新しいアパートはどうですか。」「きれいですが、あまり広くないです。」

"How about some tea?" "Thank you. I'd love some."

  • 「どんな音楽が好きですか。」「静かな音楽が好きです。」

"What kind of music do you like?" "I like quiet music."

§3Common mistakes

  • Putting どう directly before a noun: ✗ 田中さんはどう人ですか. Before a noun, use どんな: ○ 田中さんはどんな人ですか. Do not add の or な after どんな either: ✗ どんなの人, ✗ どんなな人. On the other hand, when there is no noun and you ask for an impression, use どう: ○ 日本の生活はどうですか.
  • Answering どうでしたか with the wrong past form: ✗ おもしろいでした. The question is in the past, so the adjective in the answer must be in the past too: い-adjective → ○ おもしろかったです, な-adjective → ○ 大変でした.
  • Using どう for every English 'how'. 'How much', 'how many' and 'how old' are not どう: ✗ このかばんはどうですか for the price → ○ このかばんはいくらですか. (このかばんはどうですか means 'What do you think of this bag?' or 'How about this bag?')

§4How it's different from similar grammar

どの / どれ (which)
どんな + noun asks what something is like, and the answer is a description. どの + noun asks you to choose one from a group that both people can see or know, and the answer points to one item. 「どんなかばんですか。」「黒くて大きいかばんです。」 (What kind of bag is it? — A big black one.) 「どのかばんですか。」「あの黒いかばんです。」 (Which bag is it? — That black one over there.)
何の + noun (a … of what / about what)
何の + noun asks about the content or subject, and the answer is noun + の + noun. どんな + noun asks about the quality or character, and the answer is usually an adjective + noun. 「何の本ですか。」「車の本です。」 (What is the book about? — It's a book about cars.) 「どんな本ですか。」「おもしろい本です。」 (What kind of book is it? — It's an interesting book.)

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N5 fill-in-the-blank questions give a short dialogue and ask you to choose the question word. Look at two things: what comes right after the blank, and how B answers. If a noun follows the blank and B describes it with an adjective, choose どんな; if です or でした follows and B gives an impression, choose どう. どの, どれ, なん and どこ are the usual wrong choices. In listening, どうですか after a noun like コーヒー is often an offer, and どうでしたか asks about a past experience, so the answer will be in a past form.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word for the blank: A「新しい学校は__ですか。」B「楽しいです。友だちもたくさんいます。」

    A「あたらしいがっこうは__ですか。」B「たのしいです。ともだちもたくさんいます。」

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. A guest has just arrived, and the host says 「コーヒーはどうですか。」 What is the host doing?

    コーヒーはどうですか。
