〜なくちゃ/〜なきゃ/〜ないと

なくちゃ/なきゃ/ないと

Have to / must (casual speech)

These are spoken short forms that mean 'have to'. 〜なくちゃ comes from 〜なくては, 〜なきゃ comes from 〜なければ, and 〜ないと is 'if I don't ...' with the ending left out. The ending いけない / ならない is often dropped, so the sentence can end with 〜なくちゃ, 〜なきゃ, or 〜ないと. People often use them to talk to themselves or to close friends about what they must do.

もう10時だ。そろそろ帰らなくちゃ。

もうじゅうじだ。そろそろかえらなくちゃ。

It's already ten. I have to go home soon.

Structure

Verb ない-form: 〜ない → 〜なくちゃ / 〜なきゃ / 〜ないと (行かない → 行かなくちゃ / 行かなきゃ / 行かないと). い-adjective: 〜くない → 〜くなくちゃ / 〜くなきゃ / 〜くないと. な-adjective / noun + じゃ (で) + なくちゃ / なきゃ / ないと. After it, いけない / ならない / だめ can follow, but they are often left out. Past: 〜なきゃならなかった / 〜なくちゃいけなかった.

Common mistakes

3
  • Attaching なきゃ or なくちゃ to the dictionary form or the ます-stem. Make the ない-form first, then change ない: ✕ 行くなきゃ / ✕ 行きなきゃ → ○ 行かなきゃ.
  • Trying to make the past tense from the short ending. Put the ending back and make that part past: ✕ 行かなくちゃった → ○ 行かなくちゃいけなかった / 行かなきゃならなかった.
  • Mixing it up with 'must not'. 行かなくちゃ means 'I must go' (= 行かなくてはいけない). 'You must not go' is 行っちゃだめ (= 行ってはだめ), made from the て-form.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
なければならない (must — full form)
The meaning is the same. 〜なければならない is the full form and fits rules, formal speech, and writing: 図書館の本は2週間以内に返さなければなりません (Library books must be returned within two weeks). 〜なきゃ and 〜なくちゃ are for casual talk, often about your own plans: あ、銀行に行かなきゃ (Oh, I have to go to the bank).
と (if / when — condition)
〜ないと can also be an ordinary condition, 'if ... not', and then the result is said: 早く起きないと、バスに遅れるよ (If you don't get up early, you'll miss the bus). When the sentence stops at 〜ないと, or is followed by いけない / だめ, it means 'have to': 早く起きないと (I have to get up early). Check what comes after と.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 listening, 〜なきゃ / 〜なくちゃ / 〜ないと at the end of a line tells you what the speaker must do next, so it is often the key to 'What will the man do after this?' questions. Be careful not to hear 〜なきゃ as a negative: 買わなきゃ means 'I must buy it'. In grammar-choice questions, check that the verb is in the ない-form without ない (行か + なきゃ) and that the past is made with 〜ならなかった / 〜いけなかった.
