- Using って in formal writing or formal speech. In a report, an essay, or a speech, use は, とは, or というのは: ✕ 「敬語」って、相手を大切にする言葉です (in an essay) → ○ 敬語というのは、相手を大切にする言葉です.
- Using って for a simple, neutral fact such as a self-introduction. って is for asking about, explaining, or commenting on a topic. ✕ はじめまして。私ってベトナムから来ました → ○ 私はベトナムから来ました.
- Mixing it up with the quoting って. 田中さんは来ないって means '(Someone says) Tanaka-san isn't coming'. 田中さんって、来ないね means 'Tanaka-san — he never comes, does he?'. Check whether って comes after the topic or at the end of what was said.

- って (quoting: he said that ...)
- The quoting って is the spoken form of と / という. It comes after the words that someone said or that you heard: あしたは休むって言ってたよ (He said he'd take tomorrow off), あしたは雨だって (I hear it'll rain tomorrow). The topic って comes after the thing you are going to talk about, and a question or comment follows: あしたの試験って、何時から? (Tomorrow's exam — what time does it start?).
- というのは (what is called ... / ... means)
- 〜というのは brings up a word or topic to define or explain it, and it can be used in polite speech and writing: 「終電」というのは、その日の最後の電車のことです ("Shūden" means the last train of the day). って does the same job in casual talk: 「終電」って、何? (What's "shūden"?).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 listening, って appears all the time, and you must tell the topic って from the quoting って. If a question or a comment comes after it (〜って、何? / 〜って、いいね), it marks the topic. If it comes at the end of the sentence or before 言う / 聞く, it is a quote or hearsay. In the reading section it appears in conversations and casual e-mails. In grammar-choice questions it may be offered next to は, とは, and というのは for a casual conversation.
