〜まま shows that a state stays the same and is not changed. In 'A まま、B', the state A continues while B happens: 電気をつけたまま、寝ました (I slept with the light left on). A is often a state that people would normally change first, so the sentence can sound like 'that is not the usual way'. With a verb, the た-form is used because A is the result of an action that is already finished.
§1Structure

§3Common mistakes
- Using the dictionary form or the て-form before まま. At this level, an affirmative verb before まま is in the た-form. Wrong: 電気をつけるまま寝ました / 電気をつけてまま寝ました. Right: 電気をつけたまま寝ました.
- Forgetting の after a noun or な after a な-adjective. Wrong: 昔まま / 不便まま. Right: 昔のまま / 不便なまま.
- Using まま for two actions that simply go on at the same time. まま needs a state that is left unchanged, not an action in progress. Wrong: 音楽を聞いたまま、勉強します. Right: 音楽を聞きながら、勉強します.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜ながら (while doing)
- 〜ながら joins two actions that the same person does at the same time: テレビを見ながら、ごはんを食べます (I eat while watching TV). 〜たまま joins a finished action whose result stays, and another action: テレビをつけたまま、寝ました (I slept with the TV left on). 見る is an action in progress, so it takes ながら; つける is finished in a moment and only its result (the TV is on) continues, so it takes たまま.
- 〜ないで (without doing)
- The same scene can often be described in both ways. 〜ないで says which action was not done: 窓を閉めないで、出かけました (I went out without closing the window). 〜たまま says which state was left as it was: 窓を開けたまま、出かけました (I went out with the window left open). Notice that the verb changes: 閉めないで but 開けたまま.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In grammar-form questions, the verb form before まま is the usual point: the た-form (かけたまま), not the dictionary form or the て-form. Questions also ask you to choose between 〜たまま and 〜ながら, so check whether the first verb is an action in progress (ながら) or a result that stays (たまま). For nouns and な-adjectives, check の and な (昔のまま, 不便なまま). In sentence-ordering questions, そのまま and 〜たまま work as one block that comes before the main verb. In reading passages, まま often shows that someone forgot or did not bother to change something.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the form that fits the blank: めがねを__まま、おふろに入ってしまいました。
めがねを__まま、おふろにはいってしまいました。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. Choose the best form for the blank: 毎朝、ラジオを__、朝ごはんを作ります。
まいあさ、ラジオを__、あさごはんをつくります。
