〜づらい

づらい

hard to (physically / mentally)

〜づらい means that doing something is hard because it causes the speaker pain, discomfort or an uneasy feeling. It is used for physical difficulty (足が痛くて歩きづらい) and very often for psychological difficulty, such as feeling awkward or shy (先生に言いづらい, 友だちに頼みづらい). The point is the burden that the person doing the action feels.

先生に「分かりません」とは言いづらいです。

せんせいに「わかりません」とはいいづらいです。

It's hard to say "I don't understand" to the teacher.

Structure

Verb ます-stem + づらい (言います → 言いづらい, 歩きます → 歩きづらい, 相談します → 相談しづらい). The new word changes like an い-adjective: 〜づらいです / 〜づらくない / 〜づらかった / 〜づらくて / 〜づらい + noun. It comes from つらい (painful, hard), so it is written づらい, not ずらい.

Common mistakes

3
  • Putting the dictionary form before づらい, or writing it with ず. ✗ 言うづらい / ✗ 言いずらい → ✓ 言いづらい. Use the ます-stem, and write づ because the word comes from つらい.
  • Changing it like a な-adjective. ✗ 言いづらいだった / ✗ 言いづらいな話 → ✓ 言いづらかった / ✓ 言いづらい話. 〜づらい changes like an い-adjective.
  • Using 〜づらい for things that happen by themselves, with no person doing them. For these, 〜にくい is usually used. ✗ このガラスは割れづらい → ✓ このガラスは割れにくい (This glass does not break easily).

How it's different from similar grammar

1
〜にくい (hard to, not easily)
Often both are possible: 読みにくい and 読みづらい both mean "hard to read". 〜にくい is more neutral and often talks about what the thing is like: この道は石が多くて、自転車で走りにくい (This road has many stones, so it is hard to ride a bike on). 〜づらい puts more weight on the pain or uneasy feeling of the person: 腰が痛くて、長い時間立ちづらい (My back hurts, so it is hard for me to stand for a long time). For things that happen by themselves, such as 割れる or 燃える, use 〜にくい.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, check the ます-stem before づらい and the い-adjective endings (づらかった, づらくて). Clues such as 痛くて, 忙しそうな, 先輩に or 恥ずかしい point to 〜づらい, because they show the speaker's pain or uneasy feeling. In reading passages, 言いづらい and 頼みづらい often explain why someone did not say or ask something.
