JLPT N4

〜やすい

やすい

easy to do / happens easily

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜やすい has two uses, and its opposite is 〜にくい. With actions that a person does on purpose, it means that the action is easy or comfortable to do: このペンは書きやすい (This pen is easy to write with). With things that happen by themselves, it means that they happen easily or often: このコップは割れやすい (This glass breaks easily). The second use is often about something you do not want.

§1Structure

Verb ます-stem + やすい (書きます → 書きやすい, 食べます → 食べやすい, します → しやすい). The new word changes like an い-adjective: 〜やすいです / 〜やすくないです / 〜やすかったです / 〜やすくて / 〜やすい + noun.

§2Examples

  • 冬はかぜをひきやすいから、気をつけてください。

§3Common mistakes

  • Adding やすい to the dictionary form or the て-form: ✕ 書くやすい / ✕ 書いてやすい → ○ 書きやすい. Use the ます-form without ます.
  • Making the negative or the past like a noun: ✕ 使いやすいじゃありません / ✕ 使いやすいでした → ○ 使いやすくないです / ○ 使いやすかったです. 〜やすい changes like an い-adjective.
  • Using やすい alone to mean 'easy', from English 'easy' or Vietnamese 'dễ'. By itself, やすい (安い) means 'cheap'. ✕ このテストはやすいです (meaning 'This test is easy') → ○ このテストはやさしいです / かんたんです. The meaning 'easy to ~' appears only after a verb ます-stem: 答えやすい.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜にくい (hard to do)
The two are opposites and are made in the same way, from the ます-stem. 〜やすい: 大きい字は読みやすいです (Large letters are easy to read). 〜にくい: 小さい字は読みにくいです (Small letters are hard to read). With things that happen by themselves: 壊れやすいおもちゃ (a toy that breaks easily) and 壊れにくいおもちゃ (a toy that does not break easily).
やさしい/かんたん (easy, simple)
やさしい and かんたん are adjectives that describe the thing itself: この問題はかんたんです (This question is easy). 〜やすい is attached to a verb and says which action is easy: この問題は答えやすいです (This question is easy to answer). Also, only 〜やすい has the meaning 'happens easily', as in 雪の日は電車が遅れやすい (trains are easily delayed on snowy days).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions, 〜やすい and 〜にくい are usually offered together, and the context decides: a good point (軽くて, 字が大きくて) leads to 〜やすい, and a problem (重くて, 字が小さくて) leads to 〜にくい. Wrong connections such as 使うやすい are common wrong choices. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that 〜やすい works as one い-adjective, so it can come before a noun (使いやすいかばん) or change to 〜やすくて.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: この地図は大きくて、とても__です。

    このちずはおおきくて、とても__です。

  • 2. What does やすい mean in this sentence? 雨の日は道がすべりやすいです。

    あめのひはみちがすべりやすいです。

  • 3. Which sentence correctly says 'This camera was not easy to use'?
