〜がち

がち

Tend to / often (something not good)

がち says that something often happens, or that people easily fall into doing something. It is usually used for things that are not good or not wanted, such as being late, forgetting, being sick, or not getting enough exercise. It can describe a general tendency (冬は運動不足になりがちだ) or a person's recent pattern (最近、授業を休みがちだ). がち means 'often', not 'always' or 'every time'.

冬は運動不足になりがちです。

ふゆはうんどうぶそくになりがちです。

In winter, people tend not to get enough exercise.

Structure

Verb ます-stem + がち (忘れがち, 遅れがち, なりがち). Some nouns + がち, with no の (病気がち, 留守がち, 曇りがち). It changes like a な-adjective: がちだ / がちです, がちな or がちの + noun (病気がちな子ども, 曇りがちの天気), がちで (病気がちで、学校を休んだ), がちになる.

Examples

  • このバスは雨の日に遅れがちなので、早めに家を出ています。

    このバスはあめのひにおくれがちなので、はやめにいえをでています。

This bus tends to be late on rainy days, so I leave home early.

The weather has been mostly cloudy lately, hasn't it?

  • 最近、授業を休みがちですが、何かあったんですか。

Common mistakes

3
  • Using がち for a good habit. がち is usually for things that are not good or not wanted. ✕ 兄は毎朝ジョギングしがちだ → ○ 兄は毎朝ジョギングをしている / 兄はよくジョギングをする.
  • Using the wrong form before がち. With verbs, use the ます-stem: ✕ 忘れるがち ✕ 遅れたがち → ○ 忘れがち ○ 遅れがち. With nouns, put がち right after the noun: ✕ 病気のがち → ○ 病気がち.
  • Using がち for something that happens every time or is a fixed rule. がち means 'often', not 'always'. For a shop that closes every Monday: ✕ この店は毎週月曜日に休みがちです → ○ この店は月曜日が休みです.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜気味 (slightly, a touch of)
気味 is about a light state that someone is in now: 今日は少し風邪気味だ (I have a slight cold today). がち is about how often something happens: 私は冬に風邪をひきがちだ (I often catch colds in winter). So 風邪気味 is one time, now; 風邪をひきがち is a pattern that repeats.
〜やすい (easy to, likely to)
やすい describes how easily something can happen, often because of the nature of a thing or a person: この道は雪の日に滑りやすい (This road is slippery on snowy days). It is also used for good things: このペンは書きやすい (This pen is easy to write with). がち describes something that actually happens often, and it is usually not good: 雪の日は、バスが遅れがちだ (On snowy days, the bus is often late). ✕ このペンは書きがちだ is not possible.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-choice questions, がち is tested against っぽい, 気味, and やすい. Check the form before the blank: a ます-stem (忘れ, 遅れ, なり) or a noun such as 病気 comes right before がち. Then check the meaning: がち fits when something not good happens often. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that がち works like a な-adjective (がちな / がちの + noun, がちだ, がちで). In reading, がち often appears in advice about health and daily life (〜になりがちなので、気をつけましょう).
