JLPT N4

〜にくい

にくい

hard to do / does not happen easily

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜にくい is the opposite of 〜やすい and has two uses. With actions that a person does on purpose, it means that the action is hard or uncomfortable to do, usually because of what the thing is like: この靴は歩きにくい (These shoes are hard to walk in). With things that happen by themselves, it means that they do not happen easily, which is often a good point: このガラスは割れにくい (This glass does not break easily).

§1Structure

Verb ます-stem + にくい (読みます → 読みにくい, 食べます → 食べにくい, します → しにくい). The new word changes like an い-adjective: 〜にくいです / 〜にくくないです / 〜にくかったです / 〜にくくて / 〜にくい + noun.

§3Common mistakes

  • Adding にくい to the dictionary form or the て-form: ✕ 読むにくい / ✕ 読んでにくい → ○ 読みにくい. Use the ます-form without ます.
  • Putting むずかしい right after a verb, from English 'difficult to ~' or Vietnamese 'khó ~': ✕ この質問は答えるむずかしいです → ○ この質問は答えにくいです. If you want to use むずかしい, you need の: ○ この質問は答えるのがむずかしいです.
  • Using 〜にくい for something you simply cannot do because of your situation or ability. 〜にくい usually describes a difficulty that comes from the thing itself. ✕ お金がないから、この車は買いにくいです → ○ お金がないから、この車は買えません.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜やすい (easy to do)
The two are opposites and are made in the same way, from the ます-stem. 〜にくい: この肉はかたくて、食べにくいです (This meat is tough and hard to eat). 〜やすい: この肉はやわらかくて、食べやすいです (This meat is soft and easy to eat). For things that happen by themselves, 〜やすい is often a bad point (壊れやすい, breaks easily) and 〜にくい is often a good point (壊れにくい, does not break easily).
〜づらい (hard to do — N3)
Both follow the ます-stem, and with actions that a person does they are often interchangeable: 話しにくい人 / 話しづらい人 (a person who is hard to talk to). 〜づらい (N3) is mostly used with actions done on purpose and stresses that the speaker feels physical or mental difficulty. 〜にくい is wider: it is also commonly used for things that happen by themselves, as in 燃えにくい紙 (paper that does not burn easily). At N4, learn 〜にくい first.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions, 〜にくい and 〜やすい usually appear together, and the reason clause decides: a problem (字が小さくて, 重くて, 複雑で) leads to 〜にくい. Wrong connections (読むにくい) and wrong conjugations (読みにくいでした) are common wrong choices. In reading passages such as product reviews, 割れにくい or 汚れにくい is praise, and 使いにくい is a complaint.

    このはしはながすぎて、__です。

  • 2. Choose the word that fits the blank: この皿は丈夫で、落としても__です。
