〜はじめる

はじめる

begin to do / start doing

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜はじめる shows that an action or a change starts. It is used for things a person does on purpose (読みはじめる, 習いはじめる) and also for natural events (雨が降りはじめる, 花が咲きはじめる). The action or change is one that goes on for some time after it starts. Because it can express the speaker's will, it can be used with 〜ましょう, 〜てください and 〜たい.

§1Structure

Verb ます-stem + はじめる (読みます → 読みはじめる, 食べます → 食べはじめる, します → しはじめる). The new word is a Group II verb: 〜はじめます / 〜はじめません / 〜はじめました / 〜はじめて / 〜はじめた. It is also written 〜始める.

§2Examples

  • 先月からジムに通いはじめました。

    せんげつからジムにかよいはじめました。

I started going to the gym last month.

  • 夕方から雪が降りはじめました。

    ゆうがたからゆきがふりはじめました。

It began to snow in the evening.

  • みんなが来てから、食べはじめましょう。

    みんながきてから、たべはじめましょう。

Let's start eating after everyone comes.

  • いつからピアノを習いはじめましたか。

    いつからピアノをならいはじめましたか。

When did you start learning the piano?

  • レポートは、まだ書きはじめていません。

    レポートは、まだかきはじめていません。

I have not started writing the report yet.

  • このドラマは見はじめると、やめられません。

    このドラマはみはじめると、やめられません。

Once you start watching this drama, you cannot stop.

  • 桜の花が咲きはじめた。

    さくらのはながさきはじめた。

  • 赤ちゃんが歩きはじめたのは、一歳のときだ。

    あかちゃんがあるきはじめたのは、いっさいのときだ。

It was at the age of one that the baby started walking.

§3Common mistakes

  • Adding はじめる to the て-form or the dictionary form: ✕ 食べてはじめる / ✕ 食べるはじめる → ○ 食べはじめる. Use the ます-form without ます.
  • Using the intransitive verb はじまる because the first verb is intransitive: ✕ 雨が降りはじまりました → ○ 雨が降りはじめました. After a verb ます-stem, the form is 〜はじめる, even for natural events. はじまる is used alone with a noun: 授業が始まります.
  • Using it for one person's action that happens in one moment and does not continue. 〜はじめる needs an action or change that goes on for some time, so this is usually strange: ✕ 兄は先月結婚しはじめました → ○ 兄は先月結婚しました.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜だす (suddenly start doing)
Both mean that something starts. 〜はじめる is neutral and can be planned, so it goes with expressions of will: 九時になったら、掃除しはじめましょう (Let's start cleaning at nine). 〜だす stresses that something starts suddenly or unexpectedly, as in 子どもが急に泣きだしました (The child suddenly started crying), and it is usually not used with 〜ましょう, 〜てください or 〜つもりです.
〜おわる (finish doing)
They mark the two ends of one action and are made in the same way: きのうこの小説を読みはじめました (I started reading this novel yesterday) and 来週までに読みおわりたいです (I want to finish reading it by next week). Note that 〜はじめる is also used for natural events (雨が降りはじめる), but 〜おわる is normally used only for actions that a person does.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions, you often choose between 〜はじめる, 〜だす, 〜つづける and 〜おわる from the context. Words such as 〜から (先月から, 三時から) point to 〜はじめる. Wrong connections such as 食べてはじめる and the wrong verb 〜はじまる are common wrong choices. In sentence-ordering questions, the ます-stem comes directly before はじめ with nothing in between.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 去年からギターを__はじめました。

    きょねんからギターを__はじめました。

  • 2. Choose the word that fits the blank: 料理ができましたよ。さあ、食べ__ましょう。

    りょうりができましたよ。さあ、たべ__ましょう。

  • 3. Which sentence is correct?
