〜つづける shows that an action or state goes on without stopping, or that a habit is kept up for a long time. It is often used with words that show a length of time, such as 三時間, 十年間 or 朝まで. It can be used for things a person does on purpose (勉強しつづける) and for events that go on by themselves (電話が鳴りつづける).
§1Structure
Verb ます-stem + つづける (歩きます → 歩きつづける, 食べます → 食べつづける, します → しつづける). The new word is a Group II verb: 〜つづけます / 〜つづけません / 〜つづけました / 〜つづけて / 〜つづけた. It is also written 〜続ける. With 降る, the form 降りつづく is also used (雨が降りつづく).

§3Common mistakes
- Adding つづける to the て-form or the dictionary form: ✕ 歩いてつづける / ✕ 歩くつづける → ○ 歩きつづける. Use the ます-form without ます.
- Using the intransitive verb つづく after a ます-stem: ✕ 子どもは泣きつづきました → ○ 子どもは泣きつづけました. The pattern is 〜つづける, even when the first verb is intransitive. (降りつづく is a special case.) つづく is used alone with a noun: 雨の日が続きます.
- Putting a noun directly before つづける. A noun needs を and the verb 続ける, and a verb needs the ます-stem: ✕ 仕事つづけます → ○ 仕事を続けます / ○ 働きつづけます.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜ています (action in progress)
- 〜ています only says that an action is in progress at a certain time: 弟は今、ゲームをしています (My younger brother is playing a game now). 〜つづける stresses that the action goes on and on without stopping over a length of time: 弟は朝から晩までゲームをしつづけました (My younger brother kept playing games from morning till night). The two can be combined as 〜つづけています for something that is still going on.
- 〜はじめる (begin to do)
- 〜はじめる, 〜つづける and 〜おわる are made in the same way and show the start, the middle and the end of one action: 七時に走りはじめました (I started running at seven), 一時間走りつづけました (I kept running for an hour), 八時に走りおわりました (I finished running at eight). A point in time (七時に) goes with 〜はじめる, and a length of time (一時間) goes with 〜つづける.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar questions, you choose between 〜はじめる, 〜つづける, 〜おわる and 〜だす from the context. A length of time (三時間, 十年間), 〜まで, ずっと or 休まないで points to 〜つづける. The wrong verb 〜つづく and wrong connections such as 歩いてつづける are common wrong choices. In reading passages, 〜つづける often shows a person's effort over a long time.
