〜おわる shows that a person finishes an action that took some time and had a fixed amount to do, such as reading a book, writing a report or eating a meal. It simply says that the action has reached its end. It is usually not used for natural events such as rain, or for actions that happen in one moment.
§1Structure
Verb ます-stem + おわる (読みます → 読みおわる, 食べます → 食べおわる, 書きます → 書きおわる). The new word is a Group I verb: 〜おわります / 〜おわりません / 〜おわりました / 〜おわって / 〜おわった. It is also written 〜終わる. It is mostly used with actions that a person does and that have a clear end, such as 読む, 書く, 食べる, 飲む, 使う and 話す.

§3Common mistakes
- Adding おわる to the て-form or the dictionary form: ✕ 読んでおわる / ✕ 読むおわる → ○ 読みおわる. Use the ます-form without ます.
- Using 〜おわる for natural events. 〜はじめる can be used for rain, but 〜おわる is normally only for actions that a person does: ✕ 雨が降りおわりました → ○ 雨がやみました.
- Using 〜おわる when an event such as a class, a meeting or work ends. In that case, use noun + が終わる: ✕ 授業がしおわりました → ○ 授業が終わりました.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てしまう (do completely / end up doing)
- Both can show that an action is complete. 〜おわる is neutral and only says that the process reached its end: 手紙を書きおわりました (I finished writing the letter). 〜てしまう adds a feeling: 'completely, all of it', or regret about the result: ケーキを全部食べてしまいました (I ate up all the cake). 〜てしまう is also used with verbs that happen in one moment (忘れてしまう, 落としてしまう), but 〜おわる is not.
- 〜はじめる (begin to do)
- The two are made in the same way and mark the start and the end of one action: 先週、この絵をかきはじめました (I started painting this picture last week) and きのう、やっとかきおわりました (Yesterday I finally finished painting it). 〜はじめる is used for a wide range of verbs, including natural events (花が咲きはじめる), but 〜おわる is mostly limited to actions that a person does.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar questions, you choose between 〜はじめる, 〜つづける, 〜おわる and 〜だす from the context. Words such as もう, やっと, 全部 and a time limit with で (三日で) point to 〜おわる. The forms 〜おわったら and 〜おわってから are very common in sentence-ordering questions. Watch for wrong connections such as 読んでおわる among the choices.
