〜さ turns an adjective into a noun. With adjectives of size and amount, it names something you can measure: 長さ (length), 高さ (height), 重さ (weight), 大きさ (size), 速さ (speed). With other adjectives, it names the quality itself or how strong it is: 暑さ (the heat), やさしさ (kindness), 便利さ (convenience). For pairs such as 長い / 短い, the noun for the measure is usually made from the 'big' side: 長さ, 高さ, 重さ.
§1Structure
い-adjective without い + さ (長い → 長さ, 高い → 高さ, 暑い → 暑さ, やさしい → やさしさ); いい becomes よさ. な-adjective stem + さ, with no な (便利 → 便利さ, 大切 → 大切さ, まじめ → まじめさ). The new word is a noun, so it takes particles such as は, が, を, に and can follow noun + の: 川の長さ.

§3Common mistakes
- Keeping い or な before さ: ✕ 長いさ / ✕ 便利なさ → ○ 長さ / ○ 便利さ. Drop the last い of an い-adjective, and add さ directly to the stem of a な-adjective.
- Making the noun of いい as いさ: ✕ この町のいさ → ○ この町のよさ. いい changes from よい, as in よくない and よかった, so the noun is よさ.
- Using the adjective itself as a noun after の or before a particle, because English and Vietnamese often add a separate word (length, 'độ dài'): ✕ この橋の長いは百メートルです → ○ この橋の長さは百メートルです.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜み (noun from an adjective — N3)
- Both make a noun from an adjective. 〜さ can be added to most adjectives and names a degree, often one you can measure or compare: この荷物の重さは五キロです (The weight of this package is five kilograms). 〜み (N3) is used with only a small number of adjectives (甘み, 痛み, 悲しみ, 楽しみ, 重み) and names a quality as a person feels it: この果物は甘みが強いです (This fruit has a strong sweet taste). At N4, 〜さ is the one to learn.
- 〜の (turning a clause into a noun)
- の turns a whole clause into a noun and means 'the fact that ~' or 'being ~': 部屋が広いのはうれしいです (I am glad that the room is large). 〜さ makes one noun that names the degree, so it is used when you ask about, measure or compare it: 部屋の広さを調べます (I will check the size of the room). You cannot ask for a measurement with の: ✕ 部屋の広いのはどのくらいですか.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar and vocabulary questions, 〜さ appears in blanks that need a noun: after noun + の (山の__) or before a particle (__が分かる, __におどろく). The wrong choices are usually the adjective itself (高い), the adverb form (高く) or a wrong form (高いさ, 便利なさ). Remember the irregular よさ. In reading passages, words such as 大切さ and 便利さ often carry the writer's main point.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the word that fits the blank: このプールの__は二メートルです。
このプールの__はにメートルです。
2. What is the 〜さ noun made from いい?
3. Which sentence is correct?
