〜み(形容詞の名詞化)

み

-ness (nominalizing suffix)

〜み turns an adjective into a noun that names a quality you feel with your body or heart, such as a taste, a pain or an emotion: 甘み (sweet taste), 痛み (pain), 悲しみ (sadness), 温かみ (warmth of feeling). Some words have a special meaning: 楽しみ (something you look forward to), 強み (a strong point), 重み (importance, weight of meaning). Compared with 〜さ, which often shows a degree or an amount, 〜み feels more concrete and personal.

この仕事の重みが、やっと分かった。

このしごとのおもみが、やっとわかった。

I finally understood how important this job is.

Structure

い-adjective without い + み (痛い → 痛み, 甘い → 甘み, 重い → 重み, 悲しい → 悲しみ, 楽しい → 楽しみ, 強い → 強み, 深い → 深み, 温かい → 温かみ). The new word is a noun, so it takes particles such as が, を and に: 痛みがある, 楽しみにする. み is used with only a limited set of adjectives (mostly い-adjectives); it cannot be added to every adjective the way 〜さ can.

Common mistakes

2
  • Adding み to any adjective. ✗ 大きみ / ✗ 暑み / ✗ 便利み → ✓ 大きさ / 暑さ / 便利さ. み is used with only a limited set of words, so learn them as vocabulary. When you are not sure, 〜さ is the safe choice.
  • Keeping the い of the adjective. ✗ 痛いみ / ✗ 甘いみ → ✓ 痛み / 甘み. Take off い first, then add み.

How it's different from similar grammar

1
〜さ (degree, amount: -ness)
〜さ can be added to almost any adjective, and it often names a degree that can be measured or compared: かばんの重さは3キロだ (The bag weighs 3 kilograms). 〜み is used with fewer words and names a quality that you feel: 言葉の重みを感じた (I felt the weight of the words). In the same way, 甘さ is "how sweet" (甘さが足りない = not sweet enough), while 甘み is the sweet taste itself (野菜の甘み = the natural sweetness of vegetables). You cannot say ✗ かばんの重みは3キロだ.

How this shows up on the JLPT

At N3, 〜み is tested mainly as vocabulary: 痛み, 楽しみ, 悲しみ, 甘み, 苦しみ, 強み, 弱み. In grammar-form questions, the common trap is choosing between 〜さ and 〜み: a number or a measurement (キロ, メートル, 度) points to 〜さ, while a feeling, a taste or a set phrase such as 〜を楽しみにする points to 〜み.
