〜がる

がる

show signs of feeling ~ (about another person)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜がる turns an adjective of feeling into a verb that means 'to show that feeling in words or actions'. In Japanese, you usually do not state another person's inner feeling with a plain adjective such as ほしいです or こわいです, because you cannot feel it yourself. So for a third person, 〜がる is used to describe what you can see from outside. It is not normally used for the speaker's own feelings, and about a teacher or a boss it can sound impolite.

§1Structure

い-adjective without い + がる (ほしい → ほしがる, こわい → こわがる, 寒い → 寒がる); な-adjective stem + がる (残念 → 残念がる, いや → いやがる). It is used with adjectives of feeling and sensation. 〜がる is a Group I verb: がります / がりません / がって / がった / がらない. The present state is usually 〜がっています. The object takes を: おもちゃをほしがる, 犬をこわがる.

§2Examples

  • 弟は新しいゲームをほしがっています。

    おとうとはあたらしいゲームをほしがっています。

My younger brother wants a new game.

  • 妹は犬をこわがります。

    いもうとはいぬをこわがります。

My younger sister is afraid of dogs.

  • 子どもが寒がっているから、窓を閉めましょう。

    こどもがさむがっているから、まどをしめましょう。

The child looks cold, so let's close the window.

  • 注射のとき、息子はぜんぜん痛がりませんでした。

    ちゅうしゃのとき、むすこはぜんぜんいたがりませんでした。

When he got the injection, my son did not show any pain at all.

  • リンさんは、どうしてその仕事をいやがっているんですか。

    リンさんは、どうしてそのしごとをいやがっているんですか。

Why is Linh unwilling to do that job?

  • そんなに恥ずかしがらないでください。

    そんなにはずかしがらないでください。

    Please don't be so shy.

  • 田中さんは試合に負けて、とても残念がっていた。

    たなかさんはしあいにまけて、とてもざんねんがっていた。

Mr. Tanaka lost the match and was clearly very disappointed.

  • 国へ帰る友だちは、みんなと別れるのをさびしがっていた。

    くにへかえるともだちは、みんなとわかれるのをさびしがっていた。

My friend who was going back to his country was sad to say goodbye to everyone.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using 〜がる for your own feelings. For the speaker, use the plain adjective: ✕ わたしは新しいパソコンをほしがっています → ○ わたしは新しいパソコンがほしいです.
  • Keeping the particle が of the adjective sentence. 〜がる is a verb, so the thing takes を: ✕ 弟は犬がこわがっています → ○ 弟は犬をこわがっています. Compare: わたしは犬がこわいです.
  • Leaving い before がる: ✕ ほしいがる / ✕ こわいがる → ○ ほしがる / ○ こわがる. Drop the last い of the い-adjective first.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜たがる (someone else wants to do)
Both describe another person's feeling seen from outside. 〜がる is added to an adjective: 娘は冷たいジュースをほしがっています (My daughter wants cold juice). 〜たがる is 〜たい + がる, so it follows a verb ます-stem and is about wanting to do an action: 娘は冷たいジュースを飲みたがっています (My daughter wants to drink cold juice).
〜そうです (looks like ~)
Both can be used about another person's feeling. 〜そうです gives the speaker's impression from how the person looks: 彼女はプレゼントをもらって、うれしそうです (She got a present and looks happy). 〜がる says that the person shows the feeling through words or actions, and it is a verb, so it can take を: 子どもは注射をこわがって、泣いています (The child is afraid of the injection and is crying). 〜そうです also works with many adjectives that are not feelings (おいしそう, 高そう), but 〜がる does not.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions, check the subject first. If it is わたし, the answer is the plain adjective (ほしいです); if it is a third person such as 弟 or 子ども, the answer is 〜がっています. The particle is also tested: 〜がほしい but 〜をほしがる. In reading passages, 〜がる tells you that the feeling belongs to someone other than the writer.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 子どもが新しいおもちゃを__います。

    こどもがあたらしいおもちゃを__います。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. What does 彼は寒がっています mean?

    かれはさむがっています
