〜たがる

たがる

(someone else) wants to do

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜たがる says that a third person wants to do something, as seen from that person's words or behavior. 〜たい is mainly for the speaker's own wish, so for someone else Japanese uses 〜たがっています or 〜たいと言っています. It is not normally used for the speaker's own wish. About a teacher or a boss it can sound impolite, so it is mostly used for family, friends, children and animals.

§1Structure

Verb ます-stem + たがる (行きます → 行きたがる, 食べます → 食べたがる, します → したがる). It is 〜たい without い + がる. 〜たがる is a Group I verb: たがります / たがりません / たがって / たがった / たがらない. A wish that someone has now is usually 〜たがっています; 〜たがります describes a general habit or tendency. The object takes を: 水を飲みたがる.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using 〜たがる for your own wish. For the speaker, use 〜たい: ✕ わたしは日本へ行きたがっています → ○ わたしは日本へ行きたいです.
  • Adding たがる to the wrong form: ✕ 行くたがる / ✕ 行きたいがる → ○ 行きたがる. Take the ます-form, remove ます, and add たがる.
  • Using が for the object, as in 〜が〜たい. 〜たがる is a verb, so the object takes を: ✕ 弟は水が飲みたがっています → ○ 弟は水を飲みたがっています.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜たい (I want to do)
〜たい states the speaker's own wish, or asks about the listener's wish: わたしは留学したいです (I want to study abroad). For a third person, a plain statement such as 兄は留学したいです usually sounds unnatural, because the speaker cannot feel another person's wish. Use 〜たがっています or 〜たいと言っています: 兄は留学したがっています (My older brother wants to study abroad).
〜がる (show signs of a feeling)
〜がる is added to an adjective of feeling and is often about wanting a thing: 妹は新しいかばんをほしがっています (My younger sister wants a new bag). 〜たがる is added to a verb ます-stem and is about wanting to do an action: 妹は新しいかばんを買いたがっています (My younger sister wants to buy a new bag). Both take を and both are usually about a third person.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions, the subject decides the answer: わたし → 〜たいです, a third person such as 弟 or 子ども → 〜たがっています. Wrong forms such as 行くたがる and 行きたいがる often appear as choices. In sentence-ordering questions, remember the order ます-stem + たがって + いる. In reading passages, 〜たがる shows that the wish belongs to someone other than the writer.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 弟は新しい自転車を__います。

    おとうとはあたらしいじてんしゃを__います。

  • 2. Choose the words that fit the blank: わたしは将来、日本の会社で__。

    わたしはしょうらい、にほんのかいしゃで__。

  • 3. Which sentence is correct?
