〜たい

たい

to want to do

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

たい is added to a verb to say that the speaker wants to do that action: 日本へ行きたいです is 'I want to go to Japan'. In a statement it shows the speaker's own wish, and in a question it asks about the listener's wish. For another person's wish, Japanese usually adds something such as 〜と言っています. For wanting a thing, not an action, use noun + がほしい.

§1Structure

Verb ます-stem + たい (+ です): 行きます → 行きたい, 食べます → 食べたい, します → したい. たい changes like an い-adjective: 〜たいです / 〜たくないです (〜たくありません) / 〜たかったです / 〜たくなかったです. The object can take を or が (水を飲みたい / 水が飲みたい). Other particles such as へ, に, と and で do not change.

§2Examples

  • 来年、日本へ行きたいです。

    らいねん、にほんへいきたいです。

I want to go to Japan next year.

  • 冷たいジュースが飲みたいです。

    つめたいジュースがのみたいです。

I want to drink some cold juice.

  • 今日はどこへも行きたくないです。

    きょうはどこへもいきたくないです。

I don't want to go anywhere today.

  • 週末は何をしたいですか。

    しゅうまつはなにをしたいですか。

What do you want to do on the weekend?

  • 子どものとき、医者になりたかったです。

    こどものとき、いしゃになりたかったです。

When I was a child, I wanted to become a doctor.

  • リンさんは日本の会社で働きたいと言っています。

    リンさんはにほんのかいしゃではたらきたいといっています。

Lin says she wants to work at a Japanese company.

  • 疲れた。早くうちへ帰りたい。

    つかれた。はやくうちへかえりたい。

I'm tired. I want to go home soon.

  • 昼ごはん、何食べたい?

    ひるごはん、なにたべたい?

§3Common mistakes

  • Adding たい to the wrong verb form: ✗ 行くたいです / ✗ 食べるたいです → ○ 行きたいです / ○ 食べたいです. Take the ます-form, remove ます, and add たい: 行きます → 行き → 行きたい.
  • Making the negative or the past like a noun: ✗ 行きたいじゃありません / ✗ 行きたいでした → ○ 行きたくないです (行きたくありません) / ○ 行きたかったです. たい changes like an い-adjective.
  • Inviting someone with 〜たいですか, from English 'Do you want to ...?' or Vietnamese 'Bạn có muốn ... không?'. いっしょに映画を見たいですか only asks about the listener's wish and can sound too direct as an invitation, especially to a teacher or a boss. To invite someone, use 〜ませんか: ○ いっしょに映画を見ませんか.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜がほしい (want a thing)
たい follows a verb and is about an action: 新しいくつを買いたいです (I want to buy new shoes). ほしい follows noun + が and is about a thing: 新しいくつがほしいです (I want new shoes). ✗ 買うがほしい and ✗ くつがたい are not possible.
〜たがる (someone else wants to do)
たい is mainly for the speaker's own wish: わたしは国へ帰りたいです (I want to go back to my country). To describe what another person wants, 〜たがっています (N4) is used: 弟は国へ帰りたがっています (My younger brother wants to go back). At N5 level you can also say 弟は国へ帰りたいと言っています (My younger brother says he wants to go back).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar questions, たい is tested in two ways. First, the verb form before たい: choose the ます-stem (飲みたい), not the dictionary form or the た-form. Second, the form of たい itself: 〜たくないです and 〜たかったです against wrong forms such as 〜たいじゃありません and 〜たいでした. In sentence-building questions, たい stays attached to the verb stem and です comes last. In listening, 〜たいです tells you the speaker's wish. A sentence that starts with 〜たいですが、… often goes on to a problem or a request, so listen to the end.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: あついですね。冷たいものが__たいです。

    あついですね。つめたいものが__たいです。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I didn't want to go to the party'?

  • 3. What does 今日はすしが食べたくないです mean?

    きょうはすしがたべたくないです。
