〜ませんか

ませんか

Won't you ...? / Would you like to ...? (invitation)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜ませんか is a polite way to invite someone to do something with you, or to offer something. The form is negative, but the meaning is not negative: 行きませんか means 'Would you like to go?'. Because it asks what the listener wants, it sounds soft and leaves room to say no.

§1Structure

Verb ます-stem + ませんか: 行きます → 行きませんか, 食べます → 食べませんか, します → しませんか. 一緒に (together) is often added. To accept, say ええ、いいですね or ええ、〜ましょう. To refuse politely, say すみません、〜はちょっと…. In casual speech the plain negative with rising intonation is used: 行かない?

§2Examples

    「こんばん、いっしょにしょくじをしませんか。」「すみません、こんばんはちょっと…。」

  • 今日、一緒に帰らない?

Want to go home together today? (plain style)

§3Common mistakes

  • Making the form from the dictionary form or keeping ます: 食べるませんか and 食べますませんか are wrong. Take off ます and add ませんか: 食べませんか, 行きませんか, しませんか.
  • Inviting with 〜たいですか because English says 'Do you want to ...?': 一緒に行きたいですか asks about the listener's wish directly and does not work as an invitation. It can sound rude, especially to a teacher or an older person. Use 一緒に行きませんか.
  • Answering as if it were a real negative question. はい、行きません does not accept the invitation, and いいえ、行きません is a very blunt refusal. To accept, say ええ、いいですね or ええ、行きましょう. To refuse, say すみません、その日はちょっと… and the listener will understand.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ましょう (let's ...)
〜ませんか asks whether the listener wants to do it, so it is softer and is the usual choice for a first invitation: 一緒に帰りませんか (Would you like to go home together?). 〜ましょう pulls the listener along and sounds natural when you already expect a yes, or when you accept an invitation: ええ、帰りましょう (Yes, let's go home).
〜ましょうか (offer: Shall I ...?)
With 〜ませんか the listener does the action (with you): 窓を開けませんか (Why don't we open the window?). With 〜ましょうか in an offer, the speaker does the action for the listener: 窓を開けましょうか (Shall I open the window for you?). Check who is going to do the action.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar questions, 〜ませんか appears in short dialogues. The blank is either the invitation (一緒に__か) or the reply, so learn the pairs: 〜ませんか → ええ、〜ましょう / いいですね, and the soft refusal すみません、ちょっと…. In listening, remember that the negative form here is an invitation, and that ちょっと… alone means 'no'.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the words that fit the blank: A「あした、一緒に美術館へ__。」 B「いいですね。行きましょう。」

    A「あした、いっしょにびじゅつかんへ__。」 B「いいですね。いきましょう。」

  • 2. A says: 日曜日、一緒に買い物に行きませんか。 B cannot go. Which reply is a natural, polite refusal?

    にちようび、いっしょにかいものにいきませんか。

  • 3. Someone says to you: 一緒に写真を撮りませんか。 What is this person doing?

    いっしょにしゃしんをとりませんか。
