JLPT N5

〜に行く・来る・帰る(目的)

にいく

to go / come in order to do

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

This pattern tells the purpose of going, coming or returning somewhere: 映画を見に行きます is 'I am going (somewhere) to see a movie'. The purpose is a verb ます-stem or an action noun, followed by に. The main verb is a verb of movement such as 行く, 来る or 帰る, so the place takes へ or に, not で. Tense, negation and invitations are all shown on the movement verb at the end.

§1Structure

(Place + へ / に) + verb ます-stem + に + 行きます / 来ます / 帰ります: 買います → 買いに行きます. (Place + へ / に) + action noun + に + 行きます / 来ます / 帰ります: 買い物に行きます, 散歩に行きます, 食事に行きます. する-verbs can use both: 勉強しに来ました / 勉強に来ました. The object of the first verb keeps を: くつを買いに行きます.

§2Examples

    デパートへくつをかいにいきます。

I'm going to the department store to buy shoes.

  • 日曜日、友だちと映画を見に行きました。

    にちようび、ともだちとえいがをみにいきました。

On Sunday I went to see a movie with a friend.

  • 日本へ日本語を勉強しに来ました。

    にほんへにほんごをべんきょうしにきました。

I came to Japan to study Japanese.

  • 公園へ散歩に行きませんか。

    こうえんへさんぽにいきませんか。

Shall we go to the park for a walk?

  • どこへ昼ごはんを食べに行きますか。

    どこへひるごはんをたべにいきますか。

Where are you going to eat lunch?

  • かさを忘れましたから、うちへ取りに帰ります。

    かさをわすれましたから、うちへとりにかえります。

I forgot my umbrella, so I'm going back home to get it.

  • 今日は雨ですから、買い物に行きません。

    きょうはあめですから、かいものにいきません。

  • あした、友だちがうちへ遊びに来る。

    あした、ともだちがうちへあそびにくる。

A friend is coming over to my place tomorrow.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using the dictionary form before に: ✗ くつを買うに行きます → ○ くつを買いに行きます. The verb before に is the ます-stem (買います → 買い). Do not confuse it with the て-form: 買って行きます is a different sentence that means 'I will buy it and then go'.
  • Marking the destination with で because the action (buying, eating) happens there: ✗ デパートでくつを買いに行きます → ○ デパートへ(に)くつを買いに行きます. The main verb is 行きます, so the place is treated as a destination and normally takes へ or に. で is used when there is no movement verb: デパートでくつを買います.
  • Using this pattern with a main verb that is not a movement verb: ✗ 日本語を勉強しに本を買いました → ○ 日本語を勉強するために本を買いました. ます-stem + に for purpose is normally used with movement verbs such as 行く, 来る and 帰る. With other verbs, purpose is expressed with 〜ために (N4).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ために (in order to)
ます-stem + に needs a movement verb after it and is used for everyday purposes: 薬を買いに行きます (I'm going to buy medicine). Dictionary form + ために (N4) can be used with any main verb and often sounds like a more serious goal: 日本で働くために、日本語を勉強しています (I am studying Japanese in order to work in Japan). ✗ 日本で働きに日本語を勉強しています is wrong because 勉強する is not a movement verb.
に (destination)
に after a place shows the destination: 図書館に行きます (I'm going to the library). に after a ます-stem or an action noun shows the purpose: 本を借りに行きます (I'm going to borrow a book). Both can be in one sentence: 図書館に本を借りに行きます. To avoid two に, many textbooks use へ for the place: 図書館へ本を借りに行きます.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar questions, the blank is either the verb form before に (choose the ます-stem: 買い, 見, 食べ) or the particle itself (choose に between the stem and 行きます). In sentence-building questions, a common order is place へ → object を → ます-stem → に → 行きます; the star is often on に or on the stem. In listening and reading, the question 'What will the person do?' is answered by the word before に, and 'Where will the person go?' by the word before へ.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 郵便局へ切手を__に行きます。

    ゆうびんきょくへきってを__にいきます。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. What does 友だちが日本へ遊びに来ました mean?

    ともだちがにほんへあそびにきました。
